Luxury 4x4 Motorhomes and Expedition Vehicles
Then swing up and secure the hinged upper door section, and you’re good to go. On the back of the camper is a large lockable hatch that reveals a large compartment. The void is an L-shape, with a tall space at the door that's reduced further into the space. Some lighting inside this storage locker would come in handy too.
If you decide on a Dual Cab ute, you might also benefit from a chassis extension so you can still fit a full-size camper on the back while still having a 5 seater. It simply means that the weight of all additions to the vehicle, including accessories, people, luggage, campers, tray back, etc must be less than or equal to 1.268 tonnes. These early slide on campers were large, heavy, high profile with air tent a high centre of gravity, and made with the same build methodology in the caravan industry. A bed, water, kitchenette, lounge, awning, fridge, water tank, windows – basically everything that constituted a caravan and caravan-like features, but without a chassis or suspension. Most of my customers, actually they are friends now, are people who did a lot of research before deciding on a truck camper.
A cutting board could be placed on the surface and any liquid residue that flowed over the edge would be trapped in a groove below the lid, thus preventing spillage into the storage compartment below. There are normally 13 storage compartments that can be accessed from inside the living area of the slide-on. Each stair tread is more than 200 mm wide with ribs to prevent slipping. When unfolded, the staircase rests on the ground with legs which can be adjusted in length. On sand or soft ground a flat board could be used to stop the legs digging into the ground. A wedge could be used on uneven ground rather than adjusting the length of the legs.
These tubes are prevented from rotating by another RHS tube welded to them on the underside. This stainless steel part is used in the attachment of the slide on to the vehicle. It can also have a plate welded onto it which will locate the slide-on centrally over the tray. The inside of the vanity door is a convenient place to fix a mirror if the mirror is being used for personal grooming tasks. Please Note - water tank filler caps will not be present as shown on Slide-on models.
The moulded fibreglass construction makes it best suited to all Australian road and off road conditions. Boasting the largest range of standard features in a slide on camper, these Australian Ultimate models are the complete package. Absolutely everything listed in the Standard Features is included with the camper. We don't sell you a camper then tell you it costs extra for an air conditioner, awning, turnbuckles, battery, gas bottles, etc etc etc. From expedition vehicles, truck campers, slide-on campers, expander caravans, campervans and standard single-axle caravan trailers to larger 19-21ft double-axle caravans, as well as pop tops and more.
The roof has sandwiched type construction with a layer of PVC honeycomb material between two layers of fibreglass. This provides excellent insulating properties as well as the combination of strength and lightness. Pop-up truck campers offer significant advantages, including a lower center of gravity and reduced weight, which improves stability and fuel efficiency. Their collapsible designs also reduce air resistance and the risk of getting caught on overhanging obstacles. Manufacturers such as Ecocampor, Palomino, and Alaskan Campers design their campers with balance and weight distribution in mind, ensuring that their models are compatible with the payload capacities of compact trucks. They focus on maximizing space and functionality without compromising performance during off-road treks.
Our dedicated team has been delivering slide-on campers that stand as a testament to innovation, quality, and the Australian spirit of adventure. Our new owners, with a passion for the leisure industry, want to revolutionise the way Australians explore this vast and beautiful country. While it is extremely rare to have any warranty issues with Northern Lite Campers, I do spend a lot of time servicing customers who bought other makes of slide-on campers. I personally hate to see people stuck, especially in the middle of nowhere on their much anticipated trip. When something goes wrong, they phone the place that sold them the camper and find they either can't help, don't know or are no longer in business.
High praise indeed and his opinion was echoed by tow truck operators in the Northern Territory on the Barkly Highway and also the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. I doubt I would have met any of them if I had a Fuso in the first place. Two 100W solar panels are standard, along with a 150A/h deep cycle battery. The kitchen houses a Thetford 152-litre fridge/freezer and four-burner cooktop, lidded sink, range hood, smoke and CO2 detector, microwave and swivelling TV. An MP3 player connects to two internal speakers and two waterproof external speakers.
Unless there is a request by a customer to do otherwise, two 55 L water tanks will be mounted so that one sits on top of the other. That arrangement leaves plenty of room for extra water containers to be placed in front of the tanks for those occasions when extra water would be required. If an air-conditioner is to be fitted to the unit, then the two tanks need to be positioned beside each other so the air-conditioner can be fitted above them.
The moulded fibreglass body means they are lighter and stronger, key considerations when you intend to drag them around some of Australia’s rough roads. They are a long standing company with an impeccable reputation with a range of campers that are well suited to the Australian market. This meant slide-on campers needed to become super lightweight and strong to be practical in the outback. There are some small pop-top campers that fit factory standard Australian utes . The tiny amount of space in these campers acts more as a deterrent rather than an advertisement for the truck camper concept.
Over the past 15 years we have spent a lot of time researching the various options in the RV industry for travelling around Australia. Truck Campers were initially last on the list to but ended up on top and by a long margin (see - “Why Buy a Truck Camper”). Don’t get caught out in the middle of nowhere with a broken camper and no warranty. Look for 5-10 year warranty that covers you off road, and will post items to you wherever you are. Trayon Campers are still the lightest Class 2 slide on camper by nearly 300kg compared to its closest rival and that is a record held since 1994 when the first Trayon Camper was born. Similarly, if all the weight is on one side of the slide on camper, it will put an unnecessary load on the shock absorber, wheel and axle.
