LUCK HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.

Hi Journal,
I underwent DBS almost four year ago,
with successful outcomes.
For this I will be forever grateful to the-
AUSTRALIAN NEUROMUSCULAR RESEARCH INSTITUTE (ANRI), PERTH, WESTERN AUSTRALIA.
Professor Chris Lind,
the neuro-surgeon and,
to his number two DR Arul Bala,
together with consultant nurse Megan Thornburn.
I well know, only to well, how fortunate I am.
The whole procedure cost around A$140,000.
Of which I paid a round sum, of a big fat zero.
Feeling duty bound as do, I do my own thing,
as I strive to put something back into the system
that has served me oh so well.
I do not have a problem about doing this.
Unfortunately not everyone, who has undergone DBS,
has had successful outcomes alas.
Indeed, only 10% of my peers are deemed suitable,
for this procedure. I feel for them all.
On occasions, I have been reminded how 'lucky' I am.
Well I have had enough, of being labelled in such a way,
to the point where of late, I declared that the next person
who calls me lucky I will punch right in the mush.
Of course that will not happen, it's just the way I feel about it.
My standard reply has now become something like this, -
"Luck has nothing to do with it.
Only 10% of my peers are deemed suitable for,
DBS procedure.
I worked bloody hard to get into that 10% and,
even harder, in the recovery phase.
Do not confuse luck with hard work".
Full stop, or period, as USA citizens might say.

You are so correct, luck had nothing to do with it. All of us create our own luck in most cases, good and bad. The same holds true most of the time with successful businesses and people......lots of hard work and long hours bring about the good luck.

I have to agree, we forge our own pathway, opportunities present themselves and it is up to the individual to recognise them as so often they are missed Then to work hard to achieve them, this requires determination, stamina and fortitude .... luck has nothing to do with it.

Stewart,Hello from New york. There are 4 people in my Young onset of westchester PD support group that have had Dbs. Each of them has had major quality of life improvement. Now my nuero doc has mentioned it as a future posibilty for me Still scary sh.. Meanwhile he did not increase my meds and wants to seee me in 3 months. Saturday we are hosting a graduation party for my daughter from North Eastern University with a finance degree cum laude. She also has a job. best regards proud papa your friend Alex
The word \"luck\" does undermine what you have worked so hard for. And Stewart, keep those fists of fury in your pockets ;).
Glad to hear about the tai chi classes. I havent taken them but have heard great reviews from friends that have.
