Losing the Weight: My Personal Journey

For as long as I could remember, I have always struggled with my weight. When I was a kid, I was considered pudgy. I wasn’t extremely overweight, but I did have some extra fat that made me feel inferior to my naturally skinny counterparts. As a result, I didn’t want to waste my time dieting or exercising, but as each day passed, I got heavier and heavier until I got to the point where I couldn’t climb the stairs without wheezing.
During my college years, I unfortunately gained those infamous freshmen 15 because pizza, soda and chips were the main food groups in my diet. Plus, I never had the chance to exercise because I was busy trying to pass my classes. “Next Monday, I am going to start exercising and eating better,” I used to tell myself reassuringly. But, when the time came to swap my unhealthy lifestyle for a new and improved one, I never did.
The turning point for me came one day when I was at the supermarket. I was shopping for all my favorite foods when I overheard a little girl tell her mom: “Look, mommy, that lady is buying too much junk food. She’s going to get fatter.” I was embarrassed and, when I saw that my shopping cart was filled with junk, I decided it was time to change.
Diets were always difficult for me because I didn’t like to starve myself; hey, I am a big girl and big girls like food. However, one day I was surfing the web and came across an article on a Brisbane gym blog I used to go to before moving to Perth, about the body’s metabolism called Metabolism and Weight Loss. Basically, it said that the key to losing weight is to jump-start your metabolism. There are several ways you can do that. First, it’s important to avoid skipping breakfast because it makes you hungrier when lunch rolls around, which will cause you to overeat. I was guilty of skipping breakfast from time to time.
I started eating better food, joined a gym and made sure to drink plenty of fluids. This change wasn’t easy, and I had several failed attempts before I actually made the permanent change (I suggest reading this article so that the same doesn't happen to you). Each week, I started to lose one to two lbs. After a few months, I managed to lose around 40lbs, which is great. However, I still had 15 more lbs. to lose before I made it to my goal weight. Those last few pounds were difficult to lose, so I increased my exercise routine and incorporated some toning exercises so I could get a flat stomach. When I made it to my goal weight, I felt proud and relieved .
It’s been two years since I embarked on my weight loss journey, and I am still glad I did. Now, I can wear clothes that I wouldn’t have looked twice at before, I feel energized and my confidence has gotten a boost. It wasn’t easy to lose the weight; in fact, there were some days when I wanted to throw in the towel and go back to my old ways. But, I stuck it out and the results are fantastic. My words of advice are to keep trying and don’t give up. Just remember your goal and you, too, shall make it your goal weight.
