Hearing God Over Drama Noise
I am writing this journal as if I am writing to friend as it helps me to properly express my emotions.
I live near a major airport. As you can imagine, overhead there are constant planes in view. When I was a child, many many years ago, I would often watch the planes in they distance as the approached to land at the airport. As I grew up, the fascination I had with the planes just went away. I don't know when I stopped watching the planes I only now that I did. Now as I go about my day, I do not even notice the planes which once captivated me.
Several days ago I went outside to get some air as I thought it would help me clear my mind. Many things have changed over the past year with family members going through cancer, parents passing away, and parents needing around the clock care and much much more. Needless to say, not all family members are willing to help our parents through this time in their lives but they are always available to tell us where we are failing in our endevors. These same family members didn't have the time to assist with parents care at home, couldn't be bothered to take parents to doctors appointments and now really can't be bothered to visit my father in law at the nursing home, but definitely have all the time in the world to take several vacations out of the country. This has put enormous stress upon myself and my husband and it is slowly cracking the foundations of our marriage. The noise of the "drama" just was too loud and I needed to escape so I went out into my backyard and symbolically closed the door to the drama noise.
The day was damp but cooler and since it was one of the first cooler days we've had in Houston for a some time it was very refreshing. I stood there thinking of where I was in my life and how things had changed over the past year. This lead me to thinking how things had changed over my entire life. God has always and I mean always been a part of my life. Where did He go? No that wasn't the question...Where did I go...that's the question. God doesn't move away from people, people move away from God. I moved not God. I looked up and saw a plane flying way overhead and as I focused on the plane suddenly I "heard" the plane. As I continued looking up to the sky I noticed more and more planes and now clearly I could hear them all. I thought to myself why didn't I hear these planes before? Obviously planes are flying overhead constantly. How could I not hear them? Then it dawned on me that I didn't hear the planes because I was too wrapped in drama around me to see, hear or even know the planes were there. This is exactly what I've done with God. I've been so wrapped up in what is going on right around me that I failed to look up and see and hear God.
If I want to hear and see God, I must stop focusing on the drama around me and focus on God. Then when I am focused on God, the drama noise will fade and I will begin to hear God much like I began to hear the planes when I focused on them. I am so thankful to God who takes the time to reach down to me through all the needless drama noise in my life and says...don't look at the drama look at Me. So yesterday I picked up my mat and started walking with God. Today I also begin focusing on God and listening to him as I walk with him instead of listening to the drama noise. Thank you God!
