I. GOD’S ORDERS:
A) Matthew 28:17-20 *28:19
17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” B) Mark 16:15-20 *6:17-18 15 and he said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17”And these signs will follow those who believe; in my name they will cast out demons they will speak with new tongues; 18 “they will take up serpents and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” C) Luke 24:49 “Behold I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued by the Holy Spirit.” D) Acts 2:1-4 1 when the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fir, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave the utterance.” 1) Pentecost was one of the Festivals of Weeks. Pentecost was when the first of all good things was given to God. Therefore the Lord picked a day of giving the best to offer us the Holy Spirit so that we had the Spirit to guide us to become First Fruit ourselves.
a. Holy Spirit: A) who he is- Third person of the Trinity through whom God acts, reveals his will empowers, and discloses his personal presence. Empowers- to give power, to enable or permit.) B) Holy Spirit alters normal behavior. 1) 1 Samuel 10:6-11 6 “Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man. 7 “And let it be, when these signs come to you that you do as the occasion demands; for God is with you. 8 “You shall go down before me to Gilgal; and surely I will come down to you to offer burnt offerings and make sacrifices of peace offerings. Seven days you shall wait, till I come to you and show you what you should do.” 9 “So it was when he had turned his back to go from Samuel that God gave him another heart; and all those signs came to pass that day. 10 When they came there to the hill there was a group of prophets to meet him; then the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them. 11 And it happened, when all who knew him formerly saw that he indeed prophesied among the prophets, that the people said to one another. “What is this that has come upon the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the Prophets?”
2) Romans 8:3-6 3 For what the law could not do in that it is weak through the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh. 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their mind on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 for to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 3) 1 Corinthians 2:10-13 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, and the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things have been freely given to us by God. 13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with the spiritual. 4) There are many others such has Noah, Moses, Saul, King David, Elijah, The Apostles, and Paul who were used by the Holy Spirit and were empowered to do things with the Holy Spirit that without the Holy Spirit they could not have done.
C. Not Worthy Thinking 1) The Apostles were diverse: Fishermen, a tax collector, and A persecutor to name a few. 2) Embarrassed- The Lord through the Holy Spirit is working not you. God broken and bloody carried the cross and never gave up. 3) Not enough experience. Through the Holy Spirit God uses the tools and gifts he has given you sometimes through trial and tribulation. (An instance of affliction, trouble, distress, etc.) D. Fruits of the Spirit 1) Galatians 5:22-25 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy peace, longsuffering, kindness goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 and those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 We live in the Spirit; let us also walk in the Spirit. 2) The Fruits: Love- unselfish, loyal, and benevolent concern for the well-being of another.
Joy- The happy state that results from knowing and serving God. Joy is the fruit of a right relation with God. It is not something people can create by their own efforts.
Peace-Spiritual- Sense of well-being and fulfillment that comes from God and is dependent on his presence.
Longsuffering-Patience- ability or willingness to suppress annoyance when confronted with delay.
Kindness- The steadfast love that maintains relationships through gracious aid in times of need. Chesed used in the Old Testament bears the connotation of a loyal love which manifests itself not in emotions but in actions.
Goodness- Biblical concept focuses on concrete experiences of what God has done and is doing in the lives of God’s people. Scripture repeatedly speaks of good persons who seek to live their lives in accordance with god’s will. Christians have been saved in order to do good with the Holy Spirit’s help.
Faithfulness- Steadfast, dedicated, dependable, and worthy of trust.
Gentleness- kind, mild-mannered
Self-Control- A sober, temperate, calm and dispassionate approach to life, having mastered personal desires and passions. Freedom in Christ does not give believers liberty to cast off all moral restraint as some members in Galatia and other churches believed. Nor does it call for a withdrawal from life and its temptations. It calls for a self-disciplined life following Christ’s example of being in the world but not of the world.
E) Gifts of the Spirit 1) Words of wisdom- knowledge of what is true and right coupled with good judgment. 2) Word’s of knowledge- Familiarity gained by sight, experience or report. 3) Faith- absolute trust. 4) Healing 5) Working of Miracles- Events which unmistakably involve an immediate and powerful action of God designed to reveal his character or purposes. 6) Tongues- Spiritual gift involving the ability to speak in foreign languages not previously studied or to respond to experience of the Holy Spirit by uttering sounds which those without the gift of interpretation could not understand. 7) Discerning of spirits- to discover or recognize good from evil. 8) Interpretation of tongues 9) Prophecy- Reception and declaration of a word from the Lord through a direct prompting of the Holy Spirit and the human instrument thereof. 10) Ministry- To serve or assist one of Higher Rank. God being the higher rank, Exercise of one’s gifts and resources.
III. Grieving the Spirit- Grieving meaning to cause dire hardship ailment, injury distress, sorrow, and regret. A) The Spirit is ignored or refused: Galatians: 3:1-5: 1: Oh foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? 2 This only I want to learn from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? 4 Have you suffered so many things in vain---if it was in vain? 5 Therefore he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among y you, does he do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

B) Resisted- Acts 7:51-53: 51 “You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you. 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the just one, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murders, 53 who have received the law by the direction of angels and have not kept.”
1 Thessalonians 5:19-22: 19 do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies. 21 Test all things; hold fast to what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.
