Litany of Humility
It was kind of a "downer" day for me todday. Nothing in particular...don't know why...guess I'm just tired and need to get a little more sleep. In any case, I wanted to share one of my favorite prayers. Other than an "Our Father", a "Hail Mary", and a periodic "Liturgy of the Hours" may prayer life tends to be very unstructured. Consisting of random thoughts/praise throughout the day. At night when going to bed, my prayers tend to more of a spontanious dialog with the Lord...filled with praise, thanks, fears, desires, and mostly prayers intentions for all of those I know including my DS friends. In any case, the below prayer is called the "Litany of Humility" by Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val (1865-1930). This prayer is so meaningful to me, I guess, because I struggle so to live it. I WANT to live by what is in this prayer. I do want to be humble. I do want others to succeed before me. I do want others to receive the glory over me. Then "real life" sets in and I find myself desiring exactly some of the things the prayer outlines I shouldn't. I have even, at times, stopped saying the prayer in mid-sentence...because I was feeling, in my heart, that I truely didn't believe or desire the messages it conveys. So I struggled with this. Trying to be a better person. Trying to live my life based on His will...a will I have yet to discover or fully understand. Maybe someday I will succeed and make Him proud! God bless all of you this night! Litany of HumilityO Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus. From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus. From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus. From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus. From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus. From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus. From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus. From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus. From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus. From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus. From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus. From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus. From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus. From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus. From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus. From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus. That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it..That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
