Lillian may have had a point

I swear sometimes when I deal with the misadventures of my adult(?) offspring I can't help but remember what Lillian Carter (Jimmie's mom) said once. I believe what she said was "sometimes when I look at the lives of my children I wish I had remained a virgin!"  Wise woman, that Lillian.  The latest misadventure of my brood happened last night/early this morning. One of my sons (Name omitted to protect the guilty) had gone out with his friends and gotten gloriously drunk to celebrate the 4th. He then fell and cut his hand. First I hear of all this is when I get a call from the ER to pick him up. When I arrived, he hadn't been released by the ER doctor yet.  As I was taken to the examination room where he was being treated, I began to cough pretty badly. I guess it may have been due to the combination of my fatigue, the cold air in the ER and my being a little annoyed with the reason I was called out. Next thing I know is that they are trying to treat me.(It just gets better and better).  After taking a seat and using my inhaler...and promising faithfully to take a breathing treatment when I got home...I was just able to avoid becoming another patient. I had to sit for a bit to clear my head so I wasn't unhappy that the doc hadn't signed my son's release paper. It gave me a little time to recover.  Around 2:30 am I finally was able to take him home. He absolutely reeked of beer. Once home, he went to his room to sleep it off. The way he smelled, he may sleep until Tuesday. I tried to lecture him on the evils of alcohol but he was jus too far out of it. That's OK, I'll be here when he wakes up.   I took my breathing treatment as I promised the good folks at the ER.  My coughing was then well controlled but sleep was out of the question for awhile. All that albuterol does charge you up a bit. I finally was able to get to sleep at about dawn. What a night...Lillian, I may not totally agree...but I understand. Be well,Tom

What a night you had! You must have had to fight hard to keep the docs from treating you too. I hope today leaves you feeling better.

I\'m sure your son will have a nice hangover to deal with. Then the fun of having to listen to your lecture too. The two will almost be punishment enough :) I\'m not really sure what gets into these kids heads anymore. I have a mental list of lectures for these kinds of things for my kids. I have drilled them into them so much, that I just say \"insert Mom lecture here\" and the kids know what I\'m talking about. They repeat the lecture back to me...\"I know, no drinking and driving, don\'t leave your drinks unattended, be safe, be careful, don\'t go to a stranger\'s house even if the party sounds awesome, blah, blah, blah...\" Then they roll their eyes. So far so good though....

My husband always jokes about the kids being a poster child for birth control :)

Isn\'t it supposed to get easier when they get older?????

Oh my, Tom. I hope your son FEELS BAD for doing such a thing. I never excuse excess drinking. I simply have no sense of humor for it. How horrible that your asthma flared like that. Must have been a terrible night.

Hope all is okay and hope you and your wife make it clear that behavior in unacceptable.

My kids, drink in moderation but my son too went through the growth spurt at college and I am hoping he is out of it now....he appears to be. Just saying that some kids fall into lifelong habits and I always worried about that. Agreeing with Robin about the lecture...my kids would say ya, ya ya....I think, in the big picture (my kids are in their 20s now) they really are in control of themselves when it comes to drinking and drug use. I think its common for kids to do dumb things but when it brings a parent out...a parent with a chronic health condition, well that\'s plain wrong.

As always, you have a sense of humor about it. I do hope you read him the riot act once you were able to. Take care!
