Life Goes On (o-bla-di-o-bla-dah)
We're finally taking steps to add more developers to our team at work so I don't have to do the work of 2 or 3 people. I am training 2 offshore developers, and we're adding a US developer in October.
I am slowly sorting out stuff in the apartment. When your spouse dies, you have too much of everything. I have two brand new cellphones that belonged to her, I am looking for people who need one, or I have an envelope to donate them.
One of my friends is in jail, and his girlfriend is a single mom with 2 teenage girls. We were talking about having her help me clean the apartment before my wife died and her boyfriend went to jail. She was facing eviction and didn't have enough food. I advanced $2000 so she could sleep at night, and focus on the new job she just started. I know she is responsible and will work it off. Last week she told me she was running out food, and even relatives who never paid back money they borrowed from her were being "funny" about helping her. Before she left I gave her $100 to buy food for the kids. She was ashamed, but I told her, "I recently donated $250 to help provide solar power for an orphanage in India, I can help you feed your kids." She told me she talked to the church where she volunteers about getting food from their pantry, and confessed how hard it is to ask for help. I am also trying to get her to accept help connecting her cell phone - with 2 kids and working in another town, she needs a cell phone.
I was approached by a well-known publisher of books and videos for IT pros to write a short book about CORS (Cross Origin Request Scripting). I used CORS to solve a problem when I consulted for MTA in NYC, that is how he located me. I am excited, because I am about to learn a lot by writing the book. Also I always planned to take the work I did for MTA and adapt it for a more general purpose module for Drupal, the web publishing software I use. Now I have an incentive, and a chapter about the module would be a big plus for the book.
Yesterday I met with a musician I know from my synagogue to help him put together the "art" for a new song he is submitting to Tunecore. I'm not charging anything, for me that kind of stuff is fun. He is using a vintage photo taken by his father, a commercial photographer.
I am a little worried that I am entering my annual "manic" phase in early Fall, often followed by a "crash" and depression in November-December. It helps to know your cycles. A little mania now and then can be fun and help you get things done. Also I am taking mood-stabilizing medicine that helps make the peaks and valleys less extreme.
Oh yeah, I added a goal to stop smoking (again). With my wife's health problems deepening and stress at work hitting the roof as I worked 60 and 70 hour weeks, I started smoking again about 6 months ago. At my wife's funeral, our daughter told me she gives me 6 months to quit, she wants to keep me around for a while. :D that was 2 months ago. I know I have willpower to quit.

I started smoking on the way to the funeral. Then 6 weeks ago a coworker asked me to quit with her so I did. 5 weeks ago I went to the specialist for an eye problem and found out smoking was contributing to my eye issues.
Quitting wasn\'t hard after hearing that it could cause me to lose my eyesight. Good Luck
Hugs, Sandi
