Letting Go of Some More
To build on my 4/19 post regarding what I am letting go of, I further free my self from:
- feeling responsible for others' thoughts, feelings & understanding
- feeling responsible for others' relationships with each other
This kind of sprung out of a discussion I had with my sister last night. She was legitimately hurt by something I did (or rather, neglected to do), which I did apologize for. But then, during the course of the conversation, she continued with her usual belittling, invalidating, manipulating, etc.
After getting off the phone, it took me a little while to disentangle & realize what exactly was happening. And after a conversation about it with my co-worker this morning, I've been validated & feel no further guilt about the matter.
My sister seems to wonder why I've gone & spent time without her--well, duh! Now I (snarkily) wonder why she even wants to spend time with someone she considers stupid, unfashionable, forgetful, mean, etc etc.
But anyway, I've discovered the silver lining in all this: the way she treats me makes me really appreciate all the people in my life who don't treat me that way. I will not take them for granted!
As I've read on another board, she can go deal with her issues somewhere else. Not in my head. Not at the expense of my worth and value.
