Letter about my 13 yr old DD written by peer
I always keep an eye on our daughter's friends' social networking sites, just to get an idea of what is going on in their lives. Yesterday was a special treat, when I found one of her friends posted a school assignment...a letter about a person they admire...my daughter! I will just preface this by saying my DD just turned 13...and, by choice, listens exclusively to Christian (HARD ROCK) music. LOL You will learn quite a bit about her, if you are up for reading:
Dear Mr. Smith:
I have been an eighth grader at XXXXX Christian School for about ¾ of a year now. I am writing to you because I want to tell you who is a leader in my life. Marissa L: an encourager, a fighter, a woman in Christ. She is someone I look up too, and everyone that knows her agrees! She is an eighth grader that could be in college right now, but she chose not to skip ahead any further because she wanted to be at the same level as her friends. She recently turned 13. Marissa is unconventional in many ways. She plays the drums, listens to Christian screamo, and rides skateboards. She also helps take care of her sister, Sophia, who has lots of medical problems and must be allergic to at least 20 things! She also helps take care of her mom who is pregnant and on bed rest. If I had to choose whom to be like for the rest of my life, it’d be her.
Marissa is compassionate. She is always caring about what other people are talking about, never about herself. She is the most polite teenager I know. She is very humble too. She doesn’t even tell her friends her birthday! She is a great listener; I would trust her with my deepest secrets. She serves others, and doesn’t act proud or vain. You can always tell that Christ is in her.
She is a great example for the ideal Christian. Marissa will be caring to the most vile human, and she definitely gives Christians a good reputation. Her words are always heartfelt, and she can take a joke. She will always get something done, even at a last-minute notice. She wants to be a psychologist(I think so anyway), and lead people to Christ through that.
Her impact is huge on me, my friends, her friends, everyone she knows. She has impacted me and helped me through depression, upheld the fact that music glorifying to God lifts your spirits more than any mainstream love-song, and been a listener when no one else was there. She has helped her parents with the recent death of a baby brother. She feels things so deeply. It is like you can see right into her heart. In fact, she is so amazing to me that when I first knew her, I was jealous that I couldn’t be that nice, and that I couldn’t show Christ as easy as her. I still find it hard to find any fault in her. She has made me stronger in God more than any other person that has lived before me has. Marissa is a true leader. Sincerely,

That seriously brought tears to my eyes OVER AND OVER again in that letter! How amazing first of all of that girl who wrote that, and then of those beautiful thoughts and words she wrote about your daughter. She obviously is making such an impact on people\'s lives and changing them daily - and obviously it stems from her parents, I know from knowing you - how wonderful and uplifting you are to all of us, and your daugther is obviously following in her Momma\'s footsteps. BEAUTIFUL!!! Thank you for sharing, I would definitely be proud to share that letter too :)

I\'d love to take credit for her awesome-ness...LOL But she\'s just BEEN that way...since birth. She has had a great love for the Lord and a servant\'s heart...in spite of me and my failings as a mom! lol She is also scary-smart and has been practically self-sufficient since she was 6! (doing her own laundry, making her own lunches, created spreadsheets & checklists for her daily routines & chores, etc.) LOL She is an ODD child. But balances her mature abilities with her crazy music and eclectic interests.
I wanted to make sure Marissa saw the letter, so I printed it as a special keepsake because the next few years are usually NOT our most fun ones in life...13-18 is often rocky...and full of self-doubt and lots of secular temptations. I hope she re-reads it from time to time and sees how she is able to impact people the way she is. I pray she can stay strong through the teen years!
Oddly, several people have written papers about her over the years..I\'ve had moms tell me about them and teachers tell me about them...but this is the FIRST one I got to read! I would love to thank her friend, but I don\'t like to advertise that I spy on the kids. LOL (I feel like that is part of my job...but they don\'t need to know.) It was just such a NICE treat to stumble upon this!! I will just make sure that I am extra nice to this girl the next time she visits! ;-)

Marissa sounds just like a certain someone I know! Maybe her mother? Just like you! If I could right about you that\'s what I would say. How nice of this young lady to say these things about her. Clearly marissa surrounds herself with good People as well. You must be very proud of her.

Susan, it is kind of funny because the girl who wrote this is kind of hard to have around..she has kind of deplorable manners, so she is one I have often made excuses not to have over, but reading this letter kind of convicted me..she has such good heart under her rough exterior!! And I had no idea how much Marissa meant to her! I\'m a heel. LOL Ok..I\'m a REFORMED heel! She is welcome any time!
