Labs after Thyroidectomy

My surgeon had me go to ER for a thyroid storm evaluation. They were suspecting possible thyroid storm. It's very rare to have a patient return with a thyroid storm after thyroidectomy but there is a 2% chance. I had a work up and EKG and everything came back normal. My levels look FANTASTIC and I should FEEL fabulous but I don't :( Go Figure. Will post labs in my journal. i'm guessing that my body is adjusting. The surgeon said that it takes about 3 weeks for your body to clear all the hormones from your body but she believes out of the danger zone for thyroid storm. She lowered my synthroid to 25 mcg instead of 50 mcg and I will follow up in a week.
TSH: 3.25 (range 0.55-4.78)
Free T4: 1.02 (range 0.80-1.90)
Free T3: 2.1 (range 2.3-4.2)
Free T3's are a little below range but according to my T4, I should feel great.  In the past, I felt my best when my Free T4 was at 1.03.

So, I'm guessing that maybe my body is adjusting to the surgery.  I mean, think about it... surgery is pretty traumatic to the body.  Is there such thing as transient symptoms once the thyroid is removed? Perhaps an adjustment period?

Yeah hon, you\'re still hypo and taking the Synthroid is probably moving your levels and you feel these side effects. Your FT3 is low so no chance of a storm, don\'t worry. As your body gets used to higher levels and your frees go up, you should feel better.

Thank you Brans... that is a bit more comforting to hear. I appreciate it. :)

Please check and see that the surges are related to the low Free T3. Remember the Synthroid is a T4 med only. You may need to do something about the T3 side of it.

MMZ: Would that be perhaps adding cytomel to the synthroid?

Yes, you can have transient symptoms after surgery. That is one thing my endo did say to me. I would say from being as hypo as you were before surgery, your T3(the active form) is low, hence, contributing to your hypo symptoms. If you do not convert the Synthroid to T3, then I would see if you could add Cytomel. That is the T3. :)
