Just Stand

There's a Christian song called "Stand."  It's song by the gospel singer Donnie McClurkin.  My mom loved this song, listening to it for hours before she passed eleven years ago.  I'd didn't particularly like this song.  Raised Catholic, it took me years to appreciate gospel music.
So the other week, after I'd ended up in the emergency room, I found myself remembering the lyrics to that song.  It was like it was playing in my head over and over.  I went home and I could still hear it.  Then I remembered a request I'd made to God.  I asked him to let me speak to my mother.  I wanted to ask Mom what to do about my father.  Our relationship had deterioated so much in the last year since losing my husband.  I just needed her advise.  So I waited and nothing.  No visitation in my dreams.  No cryptic messages left somewhere.
But I kept asking God for this message.  And now, months later I received the response from my mother with the only lyrics I could remember from the entire song.  Here they are: After you've done all you can, you just stand.
So that's what I've done this week and life is better.  Last week, before the ER visit, I was plagued with worry.  How will my father handle his arm after the surgery?  How will he care for the dog?  How will he get his meds?  How can I deal with his constant anger?  How will I keep my sales quotas?  How can I get my blood pressure down?
Then, I just waited for God.  I stood.  I knew that God could handle everything and he did.  So my father is handling his arm well after the surgery, cooking for himself, feeding himself, taking care of the dog.  My sales quotas have never been better.  My blood pressure is 117/85.  My pulse rate is normal.
And I did nothing to cause any of this to happen.  I just stood and waited for God because I couldn't handle this any longer.  Guess what?  He did a better job than I could ever have done.

So, for those of you reading my journal, here are the words to the song:
                                      STAND

What do you do when you've done all you canAnd it seems like it's never enough? And what do you say when your friends turn away, and you're all alone?Tell me, what do you give When you've given your all, and it seems like you can't make it through? Well you just standwhen there's nothing left to do you just standWatch the lord see you throughYes after you done all you can,You just standTell me, how do you handle the guilt of your past?Tell me, how do you deal with the shame? And how can you smile while your heart has been broken and filled with pain?Tell me what do you give when you've given your allSeems like you can't make it through?
Child you just stand, when there's nothing left to doYou just standWatch the Lord see you throughYes, after you've done all you canYou just stand. Stand and be sure Be not entangled in that bondage againYou just stand, and endure.God has a purpose. Yes, God has a plan.
