just how far

Just how far do you go for a friend?
As a friend I have never expected much from anyone. I've experienced far too much disappointment in the past to ever put much faith in others. I've always given more than I've received with regard to friendships and this is okay, I can say no when necessary. Everyone knows that if I say I'll do something or be somewhere it isn't just lip service I'll actually do it. I guess, what it comess down to is, I'm trustworthy.
Now I find myself in a situation where my word could save a friends' son one hell of a shit load of trouble.
So what's the problem? Don't friends bail each other out?
Here's the rub, I will be placing the burden of guilt solely on someone else, a total stranger to me.
I'm not being asked to lie but omit certain facts.
My friend doesn't see the problem, after all "You don't even know the other kid."
I know her boy was the instigator of the trouble, the other kid was very minorly involved.
It's not the fact that I'd be economical with the truth but as a result the other kid could get the bulk of the blame and punishment and .................... What if that other boy were mine?
I'm going to lose friends over this but I don't think I can do it.

Don\'t do it. It\'s not right! You have a higher duty to set a good example for your kid.

No Gerry you cant do it, a real friend wouldnt put you in that position, do whats right for you, because you have to live with it and what ever the lads done is his doing and he has to stand up for his actions
