July 31st Tough Day
July 31st was a tough day. A girl I have known since she was about 12 yrs. old surrendered herself to local authorities to begin a 3 yr. sentence in the Dept. of Corrections.
Her 1 year old daughter drown in the bathtub in Jan. and the state charged her with negligence of a minor child. She fell asleep on the couch with her 1 yr old and her 4 yr, old setting on the couch with her. Evidently the 4 yr. old ran water in the tub and helped her little sister in the tub. When she woke her mother up, it was too late. She called 911 and the EMT's tried for almost and hour to revive the 1 yr. old to no avail. I preached the little girls funeral and it was the hardest funeral I have ever had to do.
This was a terrible accident even though there are still some unknowns about all of this.
The State charged her and arrested her 4 days after the funeral. The families pooled their money together and got her out on bond. I went to visit her in jail and attended every court hearing.
The state wanted 3 to 10 yrs. for her. She plea bargained for no more than 5. She was sentenced to 3 yrs, and 1 yr. probation from the time of her release.
We went to her dad's for a late lunch and had prayer together. We then went with her to the court house and again, joined hands with her and her family and had prayer. She then hugged me and others, turned to the jailor and said "let's do this" and walked through the door to the cell ward.
She is 24 and according to what she can do in prison plus good behavior, she can be out in 9 months to a year but, it's still hard on everyone. I will write her every week and so will many of my church members. I will be there when she comes out, too.
