It\'s getting even better!
I had serious doubts about going back into counseling with my stbx. Our divorce was almost final...and at the 11th hour he wants to "talk." So my big hesitation with counseling this time around was that I'd already heard from him PLENTY where I "failed" him and our marriage. I had or have yet to hear where he could have done things differently or better. I'm over-simplifying here because the journal entry would be several pages if I tried to recap all the details. In any case, this past year I've done my own counseling and have let go of the anger I've had towards him and focused on becoming stronger and more back to "me." (I lost myself somewhere in the last 10 years...) So this counselor we currently have is AWESOME. She's very good and I'm thrilled that she's calling him on his stuff. Over the last three months she's pointed out to him that he turns almost everything back on to me and "blames" me for things, that he is emotionally very needy, that he needs to find from within himself what he is currently trying to get from others and the latest is that last week she flat out told him he is high maintenance. Shock. He sat stunned. I had thought he was a lot of work...very "needy," but hadn't thought of it in the way she phrased it. She's right. He is. She qualified that by saying it's okay to be high maintenance, there's nothing wrong with that, you just need a partner whose willing to meet your demands. All these things she's pointed out to him are things I had thought about over the years but he could never hear from me. He always made it my issue. It never felt right to me and I ended up beating myself up over not being the right wife, right stepmom, right mom, etc. Now, finally, I feel my feelings are validated!!! I've been exhausted always being the one with the issues or having to work on myself to change...finally someone is pointing out to him that he is not perfect. Yay!
