It has begun
Well it has officially begun. I contacted our area Superintendent, our districts school board member, and the Duke Children's Law Clinic, an advocacy group that deals with children with disabilities dealing with the educational system.
I did not send my son to school today and am seriously considering pulling him completely out of his school. I hate to do that with 4 months left of the school year. It's really less than that if you consider that he is on a year round track and they will be tracking out again not to long from now. But I fear that with his school mislabeling him as the problem, that he will face even more adversity now, especially since their run in with my less than pleased husband.
It is just beyond me how my son goes along since kindergarten without much of a problem, and then his 5th grade year just goes all to shit. He's never really had a problem with going to school, at least not with not wanting to go. No kid really wants to go to school, not when they could sit at home and play anyways. But it really wasn't up until this school year that he REALLY didn't want to go to school and actually put up a fight about it. This year he has stayed up late, arguing with us about going, which of course affected his school day the next day, argued with us next morning about having to go, and then coming home either out of sorts or flat out bawling about being bullied in school. One thing I have learned is this...bullies RARELY come home crying about being bullied. They just lay in wait til the next day and reciprocate the bullying.
I feel so bad for my son. He is such a sensitive soul. He saw The Green Mile while we were staying at the hotel and plum bawled his eyes out. He sees starving children on infomercials and starts crying. Anytime he sees someone being hurt or mistreated it upsets him something terrible. So for someone to sit there and say that my son is a bully, it is just so far from something I or anyone who truly knows him to fathom, it is truly unbelievable.
When I contacted the super and the school board member I let them know I was "considering" legal counsel. I told them "considering" so that they at least think they have an opportunity to fix this (although I DO have a lawyer on standby as of yesterday) before having the school's name splashed all over and having a PR nightmare on their hands. I WILL take this as high as I have to, I WILL fight whoever I have to, to see to it that my son can be in an environment that is conducive to his learning and flourishing without the worry of teachers and staff not taking problems that he may have seriously. The actions of the staff at his school has been completely deplorable, and I feel they have completely failed him this year. You DO NOT hem a child, disabled or not, in a room with 4 adults and then proclaim to that child that THEY are the problem, that THEY are the bully, and that he acts "just like his father". That is intimidating to the child, makes the child feel like he cannot trust those he should be able to trust, and is completely unprofessional. That is NOT how you handle things.
On a brighter note, my mother in laws cousin DID bring our dog home, so I didn't have to show up at her door with the Durham City police in tow just to get our last member of our family home. She even showed me how to make his new heart healthy doggie food.

Good luck. I have dealt with the bully issue. It is a nightmare. My daughter suffered for 3+ years. Take care and keep us posted. xoxoxoxxo
