At the fact that if our current "leader???" would simply reopen the Keystone Pipeline and fracking we could supply our own energy and not be one of Russia's major contributor by spending billions of dollars to buy energy from them funding Putin's war on innocent people of Ukraine...
But don't worry, "we'll be ok." We may be paying $5 a gallon to fill our gas tank and God knows how much to simply try to afford to keep living, but all is good .
It also may be worthy to mention that we could also supply a small surplus to help European countries whose fuel prices have more than tripled because of Putin's control of the market.

Oh yes. those anti pipe line people should go back and study the environmental impact of pipelines. They are way better than trucking or delivery by rail. As for that "evil" Putin, God I hope he rots in hell when his time comes and hope it is soon.
I agree. This world is very messed up, for sure. I pray the mid-term election puts some better people in Congress. May God protect us all and provide for the people in danger in Ukraine and other hot spots.

1- the keystone pipeline brings the us more oil from Canada then we get from the Middle East and the Persian gulf Combined. It’s the xl pipeline that was thankfully abandoned because of the irreversible damage to our water auqafers in the real possibility of spills. Since moving tar sand oil is highly corrosive. Nobody is using trucks to bring oil from Canada btw.
2- we don’t import ANY oil from Russia.
3- I’m frustrated that we were set back 4 years in developing infrastructure to change to electric vehicles. I’m buying the new Ford Ranger and won’t be buying gas soon. Changing to electric is how the US can be energy independent and save the planet for future generations. Because, yes, business as ‘usual’ isn’t working.
4- more valuable than oil is our water supply. Fracking and tar sand oil production will contaminate the ground water. The chemicals involved are horrible. It just isn’t worth the cost.
Are you sure that the States does not buy any oil from Russia. Just asking. How about the OPEC nation. The oil sands is oil that is on the surface. They extract that. And how do you know that the pipeline are not safe? Just asking again.
Hi. We import 15%of our oil from Canada. Almost 13% from OPEC. We produce about 40%of our own. The rest is from Venezuela,Mexico and Africa. This is all reported in the daily stock exchange. It’s not an opinion. Follow the money.
The oil from tar sands is the dirtiest. The ground water is being contaminated by the extraction chemicals.
The keystone pipeline has had over a dozen leaks and as it ages will get worse. The acidity of this oil is higher than drilled oil and rots the pipe. The xl pipe was sitting in the elements for a decade and would have been a disaster waiting to happen. The coatings to resist the corrosiveness had been compromised.
The pipeline was set to cross hundreds of rivers and across the largest clean aquifer in Nebraska where 30% of irrigation water for our heartland crops is pumped.
Just because there are 150 billion barrels under the boreal forest doesn’t mean that we should burn it all. It needs to stay in the ground along with coal.
Of course as we switch to renewable sources we will need to keep producing oil in the meantime. And Canada’s economy is dependent on selling it to us. This can’t go on forever though and certainly not till every drop is pulled out.
What will our descendants think of us in a hundred years when they see that in less than 200 hundred years we managed to burn the majority of fossil fuel that took millions of years to form? It’s time to do more than tap the breaks.

PS as you know the boreal forest supplies as much oxygen as the rainforest. It’s in a vulnerable ecosystem that can’t take much more warming. It would be terrible if the increasing wildfires go farther North. The forest in Siberia burned last year for the first time in ya…. forever.
It would be ironic if Canada pulled all that oil out and the burning of it altered the climate enough to ruin its greatest natural resources. Water and forest.
Anyway that’s what may very well happen. Time will tell.

Sorry Jason, but on this I can agree to disagree. The fact that we have access to all this energy (which they are constantly working on making cleaner and safer ...as well as giving back to undo any damage that has occurred) while we and other third world countries struggle...or simply do without seems so unfair.
I'm not saying do this forever...but for now while they continue to work on your cleaner energy. BTW is VERY difficult to rely on wind and sun if in flat areas or in rainy climates. What then? Spend half your day waiting for the next round?

The transition to electric power is going to take all of our support. There can’t be ‘sides’ on this. Climate warming is the greatest threat to National security. It is drying up water and crop land. People are already desperate….
Everyone should be reading about how we make this change. I don’t have time to lay out the way the infrastructure has to be completed. Small nuclear power stations will be needed. Transmission lines will bring peak power to the East from western deserts as wind and tidal (which happens reliably) boosts it.
The third world countries will always be at a disadvantage as long as the world is addicted to fossil fuels. Always….. until we show them how to be self reliant.
I’ve been in Delhi and witnessed the vast air pollution from coal and exhaust. It’s inhuman. It can’t go on.
As far as ‘cleaning up’ ? Our last president wanted to do away with holding companies responsible for that. Spills are too expensive for the share holders apparently.

really how do you think those turbine work, they need oil. And those batteries are not eco friendly either. So there are a lot of cons for electric vehicles right now. I rather see hybrid than total electric. Can you imagine stuck in a blizzard or a traffic jam and the battery dies.
Turbines need oil? Do you mean for lubricant? Yes we are a mechanized world and will always need petroleum products. NO one is saying otherwise.
And yes, batteries and nuclear are not eco friendly. NO one is saying they aren’t.
What are we doing here? I’m just a simple carpenter who reads a lot. I’m an old dog who can still learn some new tricks. I can’t change your mind. That has to happen by your will. Like I said, this can’t be a debate. If we aren’t ready to change then the burden falls on the next generation.
It’s just the way it is. Big oil has known this day would come since their scientists worked out carbon emissions back in the 50s. We will probably drag our feet on changing for decades to come. Until we unite as a nation and do what our grandparents did during the war. Work together to put a plan into action instead of bickering about it.
I see it like this: we can go to the store and eat all the cookies and ice cream until it’s gone and THEN go to the gym…. Or decide to put the spoon down and make it a little easier to come back from. What sounds more logical?
This has been going on for decades. The oil companies have been fighting this since the invention of the automobile. Back in the 1900, when Nicolas Tesla tried to invent the battery operated car and the oil companies ganged up on him. Yes, I understand where you are coming from and I agree. But I would rather see a hybrid car for now and work towards the electric cars for the future. I wish we had the capacity of "The Jetson" hehehe.
Now even the DEMS are on board with cutting off RUSSIAN oil. It turns out J you are right...it is a smaller percentage than I did think. But is more about morality of cutting funding to a "war machine".
Next thing mentioned was OPEC has no problem sticking it to Biden with high prices. Then one more thing was mentioned...isn't it interesting that he won't let us be energy independent here with cleaner options at our fingertips...yet we must still pay billions to other countries to keep it pouring into our country. Frankly we are doing the same damage to the global footprint (just pushing it onto another country. ) We do need to continue to work toward better cleaner energy ...but we will need to get the balance from somewhere for now.
You spoke of our national security... for me it is more important to stand together and support allies to avoid nuclear weapons and bombs...
We are dealing with terrorists willing to slit our throats or take us out with germ warfare... We have another HITLER who is dictating, censoring and threatening to jail those who report what he is actually doing... These are a big threat IMHO. The fact we could be energy independent and not go FURTHER INTO DEBT would help us survive for now.
I have to apologize for not being current with Russian oil. Since Mexico is using more as their economy increases there’s less to export. Venezuela could be supplying more but is letting their infrastructure deteriorate. Africa is just one conflict after another and that’s disrupting flow… On top of heating season we were forced to buy…..
As the world gets more desperate I think it’s wise to buy abroad and save our reserves here where we may need every drop of supply lines are cut. What ever we think about our sitting presidents the pentagon doesn’t have fools looking after these scenarios….
I think the division in our country is really weakening us and comments like OPEC sticking it to Biden doesn’t help. It’s the economy and we would have this situation whoever is president.
Dismantling the EPA didn’t help our energy independence if you want to point fingers. We were on track to have vehicles meeting much higher emissions until that plan was scrapped for no reason but greed. In fact the gas we could have saved with those 35 miles per gallon requirements would have made the oil from Russia a non issue….. So there’s blame to go around. I will personally be voting for whoever can unite congress whatever party they come from. In fact maybe it’s time to get rid of both parties as they are dinosaurs and neither are serving the country anymore.
It’s time we lead our leaders…. And the we need to recognize that the media is only after vast profits and that division and suffering is good for business. This poisonous influence has to be reigned in.
Unless we think a civil war at home will make everything better. Because that’s where this is heading if we all dig our heals in and stop thinking for ourselves.
