As grownups we tend to value the existence of care and affection more than its expression but children do not feel this way. They need to be constantly reassured of parents care and love and they also need to be made felt that they are the most precious thing in the world for their mom and dad. Parents might also not realize the potential of sibling rivalry and resentment among themselves that could be born out of one child feeling to be paid less attention than others.

While it may seem perfectly normal to parents to pay more attention to the child that is relatively less sharp in studies or is more prone to sickness than those who aren’t, for children this distinction rarely holds. Therefore it is always advisable, and more often than not necessary, to pay each child some individual attention. Furthermore, spending quality family time is not enough. Every child needs and should be provided undivided and free of distractions attention on a regular basis. Each child at his or her own particular age has different needs. While one might need help with homework, the other might be struggling to keep good friends in school. Having a one-on-one conversation not only makes them feel better but also allows you to see their circumstances in separate light and therefore to help them more effectively.

Here is a guide for busy parents on how to make sure that each of their children is getting the due individual attention.

Read a Book Together

Children these days have so much to read and so many ways to do so. It is also good news for parents because this means that you have unlimited choices to choose from. Pick up a book that caters to your child’s interests and sit together to read it. This will not only make him or feel that you share the same interests but will also give you a topic to talk about. You can take out a few minutes any time of the day to read a few pages and then compare with your child on how much has he read and what are his impressions about the book.

Do Domestic Chores Together

Of any of your children loves to cook, invite them to prepare dinner with you. Share your recipes and see who makes the more delicious food and faster. Keep it light and fun and you will have an excellent opportunity to bond with your little chef. Likewise if any one of your children loves to wash cars or water plants or paint the walls, you can share their interests and join them in doing small works around the house for good individual quality time.

Take Them Out Alone

Some children prefer preschool playground equipment over commercial playground equipment. Take them to their favorite playground and play with them on their favorite swings or slides. Likewise some children prefer ice-cream over french-fries. Take them out according to their own choices and spend some quality time in the way that they enjoy the most. Have lighthearted casual conversations and you will see how that helps in strengthening your bond and developing mutual trust.

Divide Time between Both Parents

It is as necessary to give children the affection and care by both parents as it is to give them individual time. Parents should take turns to take their children to different activities. That will help them get individual attention and spend quality time with each parent. This will keep the family dynamics healthy, prevent sibling rivalry and will also allow the children to talk about their lives and problems with each parent as they feel comfortable.

It's true I wish I would have done this more with my kids when they were little, but I was so wrapped up in my crap but I'm doing it now, and it is very important.
