Important Day in US History
I did not know whether to label this as positive or inspiring...but I just wanted to remind those of you in the LGBT Community that today is a very important day in United States History.
Today...the Supreme Court began hearings over Proposition 8 (which bans couple in California from marrying, even though they allowed Gay Marriage for awhile before it was voted to be banned) and then on DOMA (The Defense Against Marriage Act, signed into effect by Bill Clinton // this little thing keeps homosexual couples from receiving all the rights and benefits of their heterosexual counterparts, as well as it keeps the military from recognizing homosexual couples that are married, and the people under them remain classified as single soldiers, making it impossible for spouses to get sponsored and makes them miss out on multiple benefits there as well).
While there is still no final conclusion to whether the two acts are unconstitutional or not (the final decision is said to be coming in June), I still feel like this is a step in the right direction.
A friend of mine mentioned that, even if DOMA and Prop8 are taken away, that would not mean that all 50 States have to allow Gay Marriage. In fact, each State would still be allowed to define their own marriage laws and etc. This is fine actually...I honestly believe that, giving those who can marry the equal benefits they deserve is a first step...and even though it will be little baby steps over a long period of time before we get what we ultimately want, I am willing to smile through the progress we have made as a community, because it is better than having made no progress at all.
Right now I am happily in a relationship with my partner and plan to be this same way for many years to come. DOMA being eradicated would do so much for the both of us...so, keep your fingers crossed.
But, just thought I would let my Rainbow pals know that we are actually getting somewhere! :D
