If He Only Knew
As I wrote in my last journal, I found a group on Facebook about my hometown. I came upon a topic about my dad's grocery store and couldn't believe how many people remembered it. Everybody loved it! Dad was way ahead of his time in that he catered to the kids in the neighborhood buying soft drink bottles(There was a deposit on them back then of 2 cents.) and giving a piece of bubblegum to each kid that came in with their parents and if the parents came in alone and he knew how many kids they had, that number of pieces went in the grocery bag. Of course, it wasn't only his kind heart. The money he paid for the bottles usually never left the store, being spent on candy, snacks, or another soft drink. Plus, the kids always wanted the bubblegum and would get their parents to come to the store. Do toys in Happy Meals come to mind? This isn't the first time somebody remembered him and his store. A few years back, the business editor of the local newspaper wrote about him. He was one of those kids who brought bottles to the store. I think he would be amazed that people remember him after more than 40 years. And, luckily, I was able to work in that little hole in the wall, although taking all those bottles to a bin outside the back wall was a little rough on a hot summer's day. Well, Dad, I guess you were loved by many more people than you ever imagined!
