ICU visit with my Ex Wife
Today, I visited with my ex wife in the ICU of the Hospital, where she has been since 6/18/2010.
I went in with my daughter and my son. She took me by the hand and we just basically talked about family. She wrote on her note pad and asked how my twin brother and his wife were, she asked about my youngest daughter and her family, and my youngest son. She wanted to know how they were. My daughter asked her if she wanted me to have prayer with here and she said wait.
I asked her if she was being kept as pain free as possible and she shook her head yes. I asked her if she was resting at night and she shook her head yes. I told her I was getting ready for Bible school at my church and she tried to smile. My daughter told her that I knew she had accepted Christ as her Saviour and she got tears in her eyes and shook her head yes. I told her that I had prayed for that a long, long time and she shook her head yes, again. We carried on a little while and I saw she was getting a bit tired so, I asked her if she was ready to Pray. She shook her head yes.
This is what I said to her "Joyce, I am sorry for everything and anything I have ever done to hurt you. We were married young and we made a lot of mistakes." I said "I am sorry that this has happened and I want you to know that I have never bad mouthed you, never criticized you, never tried to cause you any problems, I just stayed out of your way and remained in the shadows all these years." Then, I broke down and cried. She took my hand and my daughter's hand and I began to pray. I asked God to give her peace in her heart and in her soul. I asked that He give strength to her in the days that lie ahead and for strength for our son and daughter. I said, "God, you remember us as a young couple over 50 years ago", when we were young, foolish, and unaware of the reality of the hard times in life". I also prayed that "whatever happens and when, we would see her again in Heaven some day". I asked God to be with Joyce and that I knew there were Angels standing all around her bed, even though we couldn't see them. I ask Jesus, The Great Physician to heal the hearts of those who are hurting and, for a healing of hearts in the families involved.
When I finished praying, she had tears, my daughter had tears and, tears were running down my face. I looked at her and said "This time has been needed for a long long time. This is a time of healing for me" My daughter wiped the tears from her mom's cheek and said , "These are tears of joy, aren't they mom"? She shook her head yes and Joyce reached up and took my hand, in both her hands and mouthed the words "Thank You". I told her "don't worry, no matter what happens or when, I will be there for our kids, Brad and Sherry.
I walked out of that ICU room so broken and yet, so blessed to have the opportunity to say what I said and, to be able to pray with Joyce for the first time, in almost 50 years.
God is so Wonderful and Gracious. Today was a time, when God took something tragic and made it a time of triumph. I thank Jesus, my Saviour, for this time today. His mercy and love is beyond words for me.
