I told him

Well, I told my husband that I scheduled an assessment for our son at the place his doctor recommended.  I figured saying it that way was the best--not asking for permission, not arguing about it, not saying what it was for ("labelling").  Plus I said it just before I went to work so we wouldn't even have time for an argument. Of course, he didn't like the idea, thinks there's nothing wrong (I said the assessment would show us that), that it was "just like when he was tested at school" (I said he wasn't being tested by the school system) and that it was a "waste of time and money".  (To which I said nothing, because it's my time & my money.  And if I want to "waste" it, that's my problem.)  Also, "there's nothing wrong with him; he's just being a teenager."  (no response--difference of opinion, but I let it lie) So of course he doesn't approve, but at least he knows.  And so now I move forward.
