I'm Done
I can't believe it. I've completed my goal to complete Duolingo Spanish. It was a long time coming, but worth it. When I started my journey, I had just expected to learn a foreign language. But I've gained so much.
So, here's my list of the benefits of learning a new language:
1. Your concentration improves. This skill had all but disappeared after my husband passed. Now, it's back and better than ever.
2. You'll meet new people. Learn a foreign language and you'll automatically seek out people who speak the language, just so you can practice. This gives you another focus and puts a smile on your face.
3. You'll feel like a rock star. That is when you're watching your favorite telenovela and suddenly realized you can understand some of the dialog without reading the subtitles.
4. It improves your chances of not developing dementia. Lot's of research on that one. Which takes me to number five.
5. Your memory will improve. I guess it's all that learning a whole new set of vocabulary.
6. You'll be able to read a book in another language. A real kick for me.
7. You'll learn the culture of other lands. And I really enjoy that most of all.
So, that's it in a nutshell, but there are other advantages, as well. All in all, it gives you something to strive for. It takes you out of a place of loneliness, it makes your brain feel like it's doing the happy dance.
So, for those who've never studied a language: Do it. Doesn't matter how old you are. I'm pushing 60 and I'm not the oldest in Duolingo. And that's another wonderful thing. People are traveling, seeing the world and feeling alive.
Just wonderful.

Congratulations. I am so happy for you. You have finished a challenging task. Learning a second language is indeed mind expanding. I bet the first time you realised you understood spoken word on tv was so exciting. Once again job so very well done.
