I go into the devil\'s snare; may I traverse unscathed.
So I'm about to spend some holiday time with my family. That also probably (hopefully?) means social gaming time with my step-brother. What I mean by social gaming is playing video games with someone else. In my case, the person cannot be my spouse (maybe after my 90 days milestone), the person must also want to play, the person must also feel they are getting "equal time" to play even if that means they are getting more time than me. I cannot leave it up to myself to determine what is equal time; I'm the addict, afterall. Herein lies the opportunity to fly or fall. I realize that I'm trying to be a recovering alcoholic while still drinking with my buds. I go into this with great fore-thought. I've managed to successfully play games socially with my step-brother the only time I've tried. As long as I am as careful as the last time, I should be OK. The two biggest things I must prepare for are: 1) Resisting the temptation to monopolize the play time. My playmate doesn't need to know every single secret room or every cool thing you can do in a game, and I must not show off or do the methodical, boring stuff that's only fun for the player, not the observer. 2) Being willing to put the game down or give up your "turn" at any moment. If it's dinner time, if my wife wants me, have to go to the bathroom -- all these are valid, necessary, and appropriate reasons to put the controller down. I must be mindful at all times and not get "sucked-in". Wish me luck!
