hyperkalemic periodic paralysis
So, I have been taking it easy this weekend as I have been having another episode. My right leg is dragging. Since I am doing nothing, I turned on the tv and scanned what was on. Medical Mysteries is always interesting. Today they had an episode that showed a man who is going thru the same stuff as me. He has trouble walking and exercise only exacerbates it. He then had a really bad attack that made his whole body shake for about a minute. After a year, he still had no diagnosis. He was using a walker or wheelchair depending on how severe his weakness was. At one point his entire body was paralyzed. He was in the hospital and resting and then the next day he was better. The doctors sent him on his way telling him that it was just stress. All of his tests came back negative for anything. He finally decided to find a doctor that would actually "listen" to him. He researched and found a neurological hospital in Rochester New York. Turns out a simple blood test told the neuro that he had hyperkalemic periodic paralysis. The doc watched him walk and could see that the farther he walked the more his legs widened to hold him up. Turns out exercise only exacerbates this illness. It is a genetic disorder that basically leaves the doors open in the muscles and sodium goes into the muscle and potassium is supposed to leave the muscle. In this case, the potassium doesn't leave and so the muscle is then paralyzed. It starts in the 20's usually. I had minor symptoms then. I have always been brushed off by the neuros that I see. They go for the mental diagnosis because they don't know what is wrong. Now at least I have another test to ask the neuro to do. I am sure they will scoff at me. My kids watched with me and said mom that is what happens to you. I recorded it on my DVR so I can show it to my husband. There is no cure. If I plan to be active then I should take glucose to lower the potassium in my system. This guy said he has attacks about once a week. I have attacks once a week. The more rest I get the better I do. It can be affected by the weather, activity, stress, etc. I feel like I finally have a direction. Maybe I don't have MS but I am still going to ask for the LP. I want all tests I can get to rule everything out. At least that gives me a positive feeling for today. LOL...I want to see the doc now to get a diagnosis.

Hope you feel better soon. Get some rest. I hope you can get the answer why you are hurting so much. Then maybe you can get some relief. Rest up and have a Happy Thanksgiving.
Jennilee, I sure hope you show it to your Dr. the video as well. Or at the very least mention it the video that is. When I am done typing I will pray for you. YOUR FRIEND Rhonda!
