Humidifiers: Good or Bad? Facts about Humidifiers
Dry air can cause health and skin issues. Humidifiers help many people, including me.
Humidifiers—what are they? How does it work?
Humidity refers to air moisture. Weather, temperature, and location can affect this. Humidity should be 40% or less in your home.
Humidity levels can cause problems. A hygrometer can measure the humidity in your home. Your local hardware store sells them.
A DREAMSTATION HUMIDIFIER CHAMBER can boost your home's humidity. Humidifiers emit a water mist into dry indoor air, usually in houses, to add moisture.
They treat illness, congestion, sinus problems, and dry air, which causes dry skin and chapped lips. Different humidifiers serve different purposes. Types of humidifiers:
- Central humidifiers are installed into your home's central heating and air conditioning systems and humidify the whole house.
- Steam vaporizers produce a cool stream or mist using electricity. They're also quiet.
- Evaporator – one of the simpler devices, an evaporator uses a fan to blow air through a wet filter to produce water vapor.
- Ultrasonic—releasing moisture into the air with a vibrating metal diaphragm. The mist from these machines can be warm or cool. One more quiet option
Humidifiers: good or bad for lungs? Is water mist terrible to breathe?
While you may think breathing in water mist is bad for your lungs, a humidifier makes breathing easier, especially for asthmatics and others with respiratory issues.
DREAMSTATION HUMIDIFIER CHAMBER can actually benefit your lungs and breathing passages.
Breathing in contaminated water from a poorly maintained humidifier can cause illness.
Inhaling clean water mist is safe for the lungs. Water mist can make breathing hard, but it's not harmful.
What they do
Humidifiers create safe water vapor from water. Three methods are used:
Electricity-generated heat:
This purifier turns water into a warm steam mist (great for cold weather and congestion).
Ultrasonic device:
An ultrasonic transducer (electronic component) vaporizes water to create a super-fine mist in excellent mist purifiers.
Through evaporation:
Evaporative humidifiers use water evaporation, sometimes with a fan, to add moisture. They are the slowest of the three types.
Primary humidifier care for health
It's easy to clean and maintain your humidifier!
Start by using distilled water in the water tank instead of tap water.
Distilled water has fewer minerals than tap water, which can promote bacteria growth.
To prevent mold, change the water frequently and clean the machine weekly.
You should clean your water tank once a week, but manufacturers may recommend different methods:
- Soap and water or white vinegar and water are good humidifier cleaners because vinegar kills bacteria and removes buildup.
- Clean the tank with the solution and a sponge. Over time, gently remove the buildup.
- Remove any gunk from the humidifier base.
- Thoroughly rinse and dry the parts. After wiping off excess water, you can use the humidifier right away as long as the components aren't wet.
If you clean your humidifier water tank with bleach, rinse it before using it. You don't want harmful chemicals in your air.
What are the benefits of using a humidifier?
Humidifiers aren't just for dry skin. They can also relieve:
Irritated eyes
Allergies
Dry mouth
Cough issues that persist
Headaches from sinuses
Sore throat and cold symptoms
Skin-problem babies
Allergic, asthmatic, and sinus/congestion sufferers can breathe easier with higher humidity. Warm mist humidifiers are beneficial for cold and flu symptoms.
Dry air can cause congestion and a scratchy throat, making snoring worse. Restoring a healthy moisture level, in this case, can make a big difference!
Additional advantages (plants, pets, and furniture)
Humidifiers aren't just good for people.
Depending on the plant, keeping your home humid can help houseplants thrive.
Humidity also benefits wood flooring and furniture. They can split if they dry out. Restoring moisture helps them stay healthy.
A good moisture level makes pets more comfortable for many reasons (especially breeds susceptible to respiratory or skin problems).
When should a humidifier not be used?
A humidifier can help alleviate asthma and allergy symptoms. However, they're not for everyone, so consult a doctor.
Like excessive dry air, excessive humidity can be bad for your home.
High humidity can make living spaces uncomfortable and cause condensation on walls, which allows mold and harmful bacteria to grow.
The role of dehumidifiers
Instead of a humidifier, use a dehumidifier if your home is over 60% humid.
Dehumidifiers collect excess moisture in the air and dry out damp rooms.
Dehumidifiers attract and collect moisture using a system similar to air conditioning. Water condensation is collected and removed from the air by a dehumidifier, like an air conditioner.
What's a good humidity level?
Most people and pets feel best with a humidity level between 30% and 60%. The ideal home humidity range is 40-50%. Don't try to get your room to 50%, for instance.
Trying to achieve "perfect" humidity is unrealistic. Instead, we want a broad range where you and your family and pets will be comfortable.
The right humidity level is the one that makes you and your family comfortable and relieves dry air symptoms. Aiming for 50% is excellent.
How do I know if I need a humidifier?
You can check your workplace or home's humidity with the right tool. An inexpensive model like this lets you check the temperature and relative humidity at a glance.
If you need a humidifier, it's obvious. There are two ways to tell:
- Recognizing the symptoms of low humidity (dry air)
- Using a humidity gauge to determine air dryness
You need a humidifier if your humidity gauge is below 30% or your skin is cracking. As mentioned earlier, you can also tell if the air is too moist.
I strongly advise using a humidity gauge.
Because we feel relaxed, warm, etc., at different times, we can't always use our bodies to tell us the air's temperature.
