Human nature
"It's unlikely that once someone makes an aggressive, confident assertion, that they will
be able to back down, or even modify their stance, when it turns out to be not quite right, or worse, completely wrong. There's a tendency to defend it [...] instead of backing up and quietly looking at the new data, and correcting the model to incorporate it. The more they defend it, the more they
believe it [...]"
Not my quote---- but someone who is a research scientist (PhD) in the bio medical field. It can be applied almost everywhere. That attitude is guaranteed to bring a needed discussion to a halt; where ideas are brought forth, looked at, turned up-side down, sideways and examined thoroughly with an open mind.
It's called scientific argument and is a time honored way to present facts. Those facts may be upset later but never by testimonials/ hearsay and their 'relatives'.
