Since search engines allow you to view all kinds of data, you may find clues that can point you in the right direction. For example, if the phone number is associated with a business or website, the business or website info will appear.

2. Try a reverse-lookup database. There are many free websites that can provide basic information about phone numbers. If the phone number you're tracking is a landline (not a cell phone) and not a personal one, you may be able to find the caller's name, business name, and/or address on a reverse lookup site.

3. Look for the number on Facebook or other social networking sites. Depending on the social network, you may be able to search the phone number to find the owner's profile on the site.

4. Call the number. Explain to whoever answers that you have received a call from that number. Ask politely who they are. If they tell you, there's no need to continue! If not, try one of the methods below.
