How to scan OMR sheets

Scanning OMR sheets is no longer a tedious process. You do not have to buy a special scanner to do it; rather, a normal OMR scanner can do the work for you. You can either use an ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) scanner where you can feed multiple sheets at one time or you can go for a Flatbed scanner where you can place only one sheet at a time. The type of scanner you choose would depend on your budget and requirements although most people opt for the ADF scanner as it is fast and hence time saving too. As we have already discussed about the type of scanner to use, let us take a look at how to scan OMR sheets.

Instruction for scanning OMR sheets

While the scanning process is simple, there are some instructions that you need to follow to make sure that you get accurate results.

•         With the ADF scanner, you can place multiple numbers of sheets in the scanner pocket. However, you have to ensure that they do not tilt or sway during the scanning. For this reason, close the side holding brackets of the pocket properly before scanning the sheets. Make sure that the index points are printed properly.


•         You can scan the sheets in any scanning mode, be it black and white (1-Bit) mode, color or grayscale. For answer sheet scanning, using black and white mode is the best. Color formats are required only in case of scanning colored OMR sheets. However, if you have an advanced scanner, the color sheet can be converted into a black and white one. Color mode is usually required when there is a colored photograph attached to the sheet.


•         Choose a DPI between 100 and 200 while scanning the OMR sheet. Higher DPI is not required for accurate scanning reading. On the other hand, 100 DPI is enough for accurate scanning reading of the sheet. Actually, when the image size is low, it is easier to handle and upload it. Nevertheless, if the OMR sheet has a barcode, it would be best to use a DPI between 150 and 200.


•         The OMR sheet should be scanned in TIFF and BMP files, which are supported by all types of scanners. The sheets should never be scanned in PDF format. While the software does not read in JPG format, you can still scan it in the format as it gets converted into BMP file automatically by the software before reading.
