How to Make a Tzatziki Recipe

Tzatziki is the perfect blend of cool cucumber, yummy yogurt, and savory dill. This refreshing dip, spread or sauce is a staple at Greek and Mediterranean restaurants, but you can easily make it at home in just a few minutes. It’s easy to pair with any meat, veggies, chips or pita bread. It also goes well with other Mediterranean foods such as falafel or gyro. Tzatziki is a wonderful choice for those looking to add some flavor and texture to their meals, especially since it has a garlic punch that brightens other dishes.

Tzatziki recipes vary depending on the region and chef, but most contain the same basic ingredients. You’ll need grated cucumber, plain or full fat Greek yogurt, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and herbs (typically dill or mint). You can use fresh or dried dill, but it’s best to use the fresh variety because it will have more flavor than dried.

The first step in making tzatziki is to remove the seeds from the cucumber and then shred it using the larger side of a box grater. It is important to grate the cucumber while it is still wet so that as much water is leached out of it as possible. Then place the cucumber in a fine mesh strainer and gently press it. The strainer helps to get rid of excess moisture and also allows the dill to release its flavor into the yogurt.

After the cucumber has been drained, combine it in a medium bowl with the rest of the ingredients. The tzatziki will be thicker when you use full fat Greek yogurt. Plain or low-fat yogurt can also be used, but the tzatziki will be thinner. Add a pinch of salt and some freshly squeezed lemon juice to season the tzatziki. If desired, a bit of extra virgin olive oil can be added to the recipe as well.

Once the tzatziki is made, it should be refrigerated for at least 30 minutes so that the flavors have time to meld together. It will keep for up to a few days in the refrigerator, but be sure to serve it right away for the best texture and flavor.
