How to help...what to say...?
I went to my half-brother's girl-friends visitation and her funeral is tomorrow. My half-brotehr seems to be holding up well. However, he realizes that a lot of that is because when you are making funeral arrangements for someone, you are quite busy. Plus, he now has to find a new place to live (she owned the house they were living in) and his three kids are around to provide support. However, a couple of weeks from now...when the calls stop coming, friends quit stopping but, and everyone's life has returned to normal, his certainly won't. He's going to be missing her terribly and, I'm sure, as he particuipates in activities they shared together, her memory will flood him with sadness. Like most people, I guess, I wish I could tell he some "magic" words that would make him feel better. He's not really religious, so reading bible verses about the reason for death of a loved one probably won't be received too well. Telling him stuff like "she's not in pain now" or "she's in a better place than us", may bring him a little comfort, but seem too cliche and, doesn't solve teh struggles he's going to be facing. Fortunately for me, I have never experience the sudden death of a loved one. However, this then make me "unqualified" to participate in the "I've been there and know what you are experiencing" type discussions. It's frustrating in wanting to help someone so much, but just not know what to say/do. However, I remind myself to keep this in perspective...he's the one who is suffering and needs support...and I can't lose sight in that by feel sorry for myself...
