How to "feel safe."

A lot of us in DS have trouble feeling safe.  Maybe it's PTSD, past violence in our lives, insecurity, anxiety, panic attacks, shyness, OCD... the end result is we never feel as in control of life as we want to.
I only know what worked for me once and I'm trying to get working again.
Two main things.  Learn skills so you know you CAN handle situations that crop up unexpectedly that ruin the sense of safety.  And learn to accept that accidents happen no matter HOW well you plan, but they won't last forever.
First, skills.  In life you can either focus on getting "stuff" or learning "skills."  Skills are better, since no one can steal them, you can't lose them if you keep in practice, and you always have them with you.  People focus on stuff they can buy and not skills they can learn, and mindless entertainment to distract them from better things they could be doing with their time.
Worried about being hurt?  Learn self defense.  Learn first aid.  Learn about disaster preparedness, the free resources out there on that are staggeringly under-used.
Worried about money?  Learn home making skills to live cheaper.  Learn to garden, cook from scratch, sew buttons back on.
Anything that you're afraid of has a solution.  Learn the skills for that solution.  It'll help.
ALSO... study what you're scared of.  If your OCD has you worried about shark attacks, go study sharks and how often they REALLY attack people.  If your fear is a realistic one, you'll find out quickly.  If it isn't, it'll be that easier to stop being afraid of it.
