How to Conquer Your Kids’ Back-to-School Stress

Going to school after a few weeks becomes difficult for the kids. Kids are worried about the troubles with other students, teachers, or their homework. These and many other things create stress that can keep kids from enjoying school. Sometimes even a new preschool playground equipment is not enough to entice them to the school. By helping kids to work through their stress, you actually make them stronger to deal with future hurdles. Here are some of the tips to arm yourself for a smooth back-to-school routine:
Listen to your kids: Listening to your school goer is the first step in the right direction. Understanding their feelings and their worries would be the ideal way manage their stress. Talk to them about what’s going on at school. Even if they don’t talk, look for the non-verbal cues, if any. You can start the conversation with your kid about school while you are driving home, at the supermarket, or during a house chore. The art here would be to know as much as you can without pressurizing them for answers.
Discuss homework: This is perhaps most of the times one of the most worrying causes of stress among the kids. If your kid is new to the homework, discuss about it before they start doing it. Help them plan out how to complete all the given tasks. Schedule the work in a day-to-day routine or week wise plan. Your focus here should not be on the grades but on completion of tasks and understanding the concepts of the assignments. This will not only make your kids more disciplined but also help them achieve the tasks without getting stressed.
Setup a routine: Vacation can sometimes ruin your kid’s habits from eating to going to bed for sleep. A culmination of these small habits renders your kid lazy enough to accept the idea of going back to school. And when the time to join school comes, kids come under stress due to some acquired habits. Help your kids in getting back to routine by giving them small tasks. You can set breakfast and morning routine tasks that can work for everyone. Try to make these tasks more exciting and lead by example by happily sharing the plans.
Give time to relax: Besides setting all the routine and activities for your kids in their time for run up to the school, it is important to afford your kids some leisure time to relax. Kids should be given a kind of “free-reign” at home or outdoors. It’s even better if you take them to the school before the vacation is over and give them time to gel with their schoolmates at preschool playground equipment or some other activities. You can also set one day as a “free day”, and stick to that schedule for the school year. Your child will be relaxed and better prepared for the school.
