The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the brain of a computer, performing hundreds of thousands of operations per second to keep your desktop working at peak efficiency. But all that operation generates heat, and the CPU relies on a metal heat sink to dissipate that heat. Unfortunately, the interface between the two isn't a perfect one. There are microscopic peaks and troughs between the processor and its heat spreader, as well as air pockets that act as thermal insulators and slow down the transfer of heat. Thermal paste fills those holes and creates a malleable layer to improve the performance of the CPU's cooler.

But not all thermal paste is created equal, and there are different methods for applying it, too. The simplest method involves placing a small dab of the compound in the center of the CPU, about the size of a pea or grain of rice. Then you lower the CPU's heat sink onto it, pressing down on all four corners evenly to squash the paste and eliminate air bubbles, which will interfere with proper cooling.

There are other application methods, but they tend to be messy. Some use a syringe to apply the compound, which can be easy to do, as long as the surface of both the cooler and the CPU are clean and free of dust.
