It has been just over two months since life as I knew it ended in the blink of an eye. I have personally been a victim of a very bad car accident which not only caused me physical injuries but emotional as well. To be honest, I have not easily come to terms with what happened and although it still hurts to talk about it, I am now ready to share my story. This has assisted me in altering the perception of the need to exercise and remain fit in society.

The Day of the Accident

This story is based in San Francisco and at the time of the events of this story my husband and I were living in San Francisco. I had to relax for a while and go to another dog park with Rocket, our hyperactive beagle. When I offered to drive, we got into our red Mini Cooper not knowing that we were about to turn over a new page in our lives.

As we got close to the park, I began searching for a parking lot. Not finding one on the main strip, I turned into a side road and began to parallel park – a maneuver that I had perfected from my years of living in the city. That's when I saw it: a car coming towards us in the back mirror as if the car was chasing us. It was one of those situations where there was no time to weigh the pros and cons and simply decide what to do. The first impact made the car swerve to the right suddenly. The second impact and all went black for me. Here you may check out at las vegas car accident lawyer for more details

I found myself awake, trapped in our car that was lying on its side with the wheels up in the air. I was surrounded by glass and my head was throbbing. It was the voices of strangers urging me to leave and yet my feet didn’t move. I gradually realized that it was my bag on which they had pinned their hopes. I managed to open my seat belt and tried to get out through the sunroof but I was unable to do so.

My husband, Brian, was right behind me, and in a very powerful and loving way, he ripped the sunroof off to free me and I was sore and bewildered but thinking of Rocket. I started screaming her name, but no one knew where she could go to.

The Aftermath

The police and the ambulance arrived at the place very fast. The EMTs attempted to place me on the stretcher, but I would not get on without Rocket. Two of them were telling me that they would search for her if I went to the hospital, one of them was a firefighter and the other one was an EMT. I nodded begrudgingly because I knew that I could not go searching for her on my own like this.

When Brian and I were out on stretchers and being taken in the ambulance, I could only pant. I also started to worry not only for Rocket but also for Brian or myself getting more seriously injured in the future. But then I remembered something that I had read when meditating and deliberately I took a deep breath. This small act of self-care was quite effective in helping me find my balance again.

A few moments later we learned that a woman had developed a slide off the road while going up the hill. Instead of braking she pressed the accelerator and hit us then rammed through eight other parked vehicles. We were privileged to have been alive at that time.

The Road to Recovery

For instance, it was Wednesday night and we had a car accident but could not see our doctor until the weekend because he was out of town. But we believed that going camping that weekend would help and try to get back to some sort of normalcy. But the physical and emotional pain stayed with them. My head and neck were painful all the time and Brian had a rotator cuff tear. Rocket also had gastro problems and was also scared of loud noises.

Finally, when we were taken to see our doctor he could not believe that after such an accident we were in such good condition. He ordered other tests and found out that I had a mild concussion and whiplash. But he told me that I was much better off than the majority of the population that have to go through such trials. Brian also had a rotator cuff issue which he would later get fixed.

Lessons Learned

I had always been conscious of my health and fitness before the accident that happened to me. It gave me this sense of strength, confidence, and happiness. But I could never fathom how crucial it is to have such habits when one is dealing with life. The exercise I got and the food I took made me recover and stand up to face the next session.

After one week, I was able to start exercising again although it was very light due to the pains I was experiencing. My doctor’s words echoed in my mind: At this time, all the efforts I had taken toward the maintenance of my body were yielding good results. As far as I am concerned, there could be no question that he was right.

Moving Forward

Now, two months after the crash, I am nearly okay. The physical was rather swift, but the process of healing emotionally and psychologically has been rather slow. At other times, I have had to wait for my mind to be ready to handle the trauma that has occurred to me.
