What to do in an emergency
What should you do if you come to the scene of an accident as a first aid worker?
Secure the accident site
First aid does not begin with life-saving measures, but with your own safety. Do you recognize an emergency? Keep calm and get an overview and assess the threats.
For example, are you passing a traffic accident? Then the following applies: Immediately after stopping, switch on the hazard warning lights, put on a safety vest and set up a warning triangle. This way, following road users are warned and consequential accidents can be avoided.
Bring the victim out of the danger zone
Sometimes injured people have to be brought out of the danger zone, for example when a fire is imminent. To do this, put your hands through the person's armpits, place their forearm on their stomach and grasp the forearm with both hands. This will allow you to drag the victim to a safe place, leaning on your thigh, and gently place it there.
Make an emergency call
In the event of a traffic accident or house fire, the situation is pretty straightforward and you should dial emergency call immediately. Situations are more difficult, for example when someone sits pale at the side of the road, waves away and says: "It's okay". If you are unsure of the circumstances, you can also dial the emergency number.
The control center then asks specific questions about the situation and quickly finds out what kind of help is required in each individual case. The following information is therefore always important:
Where did something happen?
What happened?
How many people are affected?
What injuries / illnesses are there?
Do not hang up until the control center has ended the call and leave your name and telephone number for possible callbacks.
Get support
Sometimes the situation is overwhelming, or maybe you can't see blood. Draw attention to yourself by waving or gesturing to other people to stop. When you ask for help from others, you no longer feel that you are solely responsible for everything and you can share the tasks.
Apply first aid measures
Continue to take care of the affected person until the ambulance service arrives. The action you take depends on the injuries.
Caring for bleeding properly
The victim bleeds but is conscious. If possible, put on disposable gloves. If the wound is open, try to stop the bleeding by applying a bandage so that pressure is applied to the wound. If there is a foreign body in the injury, you must never remove it. Leave that to the emergency services. Because when you pull it out, there is a risk that it will bleed even more, the wound will enlarge or the remains will get stuck. It is sufficient if you carefully cover the injury with a sterile bandage.
Until the emergency services arrive, stay with the affected person, talk to them well and provide warmth if necessary. To protect against hypothermia, you can take a rescue blanket; the silver side points to the victim.
Unconscious with breathing
Is the person unconscious, i.e. does not react to loud speaking or strong shaking of the shoulder, but is breathing normally? Then bring him into the stable side position. This will prevent fluids such as blood or vomit from getting into the airways, which could lead to suffocation. Since the entire musculature slackens, there is also the risk that the tongue will fall back and block the airways.

And this is how you perform the stable side position correctly: Kneel down next to the victim and put your near arm upwards at a right angle. Then bring the back of the hand of the other arm to the cheek and hold it. Stand up the distant leg, grab the person by this leg and pull them to the side. In the correct end position, the thigh is at right angles to the hip, the fingers under the cheek hold the head in the hyperextended position and the mouth is open.
Unconscious without breathing
If breathing is irregular or has stopped completely, this indicates a cardiac arrest which, if left untreated, inevitably leads to cardiac arrest. There is an acute danger to life. Therefore, start cardiopulmonary resuscitation immediately.
