How does one live through this?
I met a woman at my local support group meeting last night and I can't for the life of me, figure out how she has lived through so much. She told us of a tragic car accident that happened many years ago. She not only lost her husband of 18 yrs. but she also lost her 4 children, ranging from 4-16 yrs. old. She eventually remarried and was with him for 18 yrs., until he passed away in March, 2011. On top of that, she has nowhere to go after Oct. 5th. She had her 2 dogs with her. She could not have her dogs where she is so, she made the difficult decision to put her 15 yr. old smaller dog to sleep. Her golden retriever is 1 1/2 yrs. old and handicapped due to part of a front paw missing. In order to have a roof over her head, she had to turn him over to the shelter. They found an infection and amputated his front leg. He is now in a foster home. Just to see the hopelessness, lifelessness in her face tore me apart. When the meeting was finished, we hugged and I hated to let this woman go! I and another member are in the process of searching for an affordable apartment/room for her. She receives only a small monthly check. I know sometimes we cannot believe everything we hear but, just one look into her eyes left me with no doubt about her truthfulness. It was rather hard to get her to talk but once she did, I felt so sorry for her. She keeps her head down. She reminded me of a little girl that was being scolded. We got her to smile and she was beautiful! I hope to see her again. Our meetings are only every other Thursday, so by the next meeting, she may be on the streets. I wish there was more we could do for her. We asked her about all of the birthdays and holidays and she said she kind of blocks them out and sometimes cannot remember these days at all. It's like she intentionally skips right over these days without realizing it. She has got to be among the strongest people I have ever met. To even want to live after so much, puzzles me. I will not forget her. Only God could have gotten her this far. Her every breath must be a nightmare. I know I hurt over my losses but, how can anyone find the will to live with no one to turn to? I told her about this site but of course, she has no access to a computer. I am certain that I could not endure what she has been through. If anyone reads this, please join me in praying for this poor courageous woman.
