How Does an Off Line Cooling System Work?

Cooling system for a computer takes advantage of a basic principle of thermodynamics: heat moves from warmer to cooler objects. In the PC world this means that the electrical components that power your CPU and GPU generate a lot of heat, which must be removed in order to keep the processor running smoothly. There are two principal ways to remove this heat: air and liquid. Air cooling systems use ductwork to move the hot air away from the power electronics and out of the case, while liquid cooling uses a system of tubes that carry water from a reservoir to the component, a radiator to remove excess heat and a pump to recirculate the coolant around the loop.


A closed-loop liquid cooling system is a more complicated setup that requires a greater degree of technical knowledge to install and maintain. Its large footprint in a PC case is due to the size of the radiator and the number of fans required to move the water through the loop. These systems typically require space for the radiator to replace one of the internal case fans, as well as enough room for a large pump and tubing that connects to the component. They also require a significant amount of vertical space to route the tubing in an effective manner.


An open recirculating liquid cooling system uses a pond or tower for heat removal. Warm water is drawn out of the process through heat exchangers, which are then cooled by evaporation of a portion of the water. This cooled water is then returned to the process, and the cycle repeats. This type of system is less expensive than a closed-loop system but may experience corrosion and bio-fouling problems that require periodic flushing of the water to prevent the problem from spreading throughout the entire process.


Unlike air cooling, a liquid cooling system works on the simple principle that the cooler the fluid is, the more efficiently it will transfer heat. Liquid coolant is pumped through pipes that attach to the heat sinks on the processor and other power components. The heat that is generated by these chips is transferred to the coolant, which then transfers that heat to a radiator, which removes it from the system. The cooled liquid then flows back to the processor via the pipe, and the process repeats.


Many PC users upgrade to liquid cooling as a way to allow for higher processor speeds than their manufacturers recommend, a practice called overclocking. Overclocking often imposes additional heat on the components, which requires more efficient cooling to avoid overheating and failure. However, it is important to note that continuous exceeding of manufacturer specs can void warranty coverage and lead to long-term reliability issues, even with the extra cooling provided by a good liquid-cooling system.


A forced-air oil cooler has a fan that pushes air over the surface of a coil or core to cool the hydraulic oil. These units require a power source and can be installed in systems that are subject to variations in pressure and flow rates, such as CNC machines and hydraulic presses.off line cooling system
