How do you use a herb drying rack?

What is a herb drying rack?

A decorative and functional steel rack dries some bunches of your garden herbs — flowers, hot peppers and garlic too. Because there's no electricity needed or prep work — just cut, tie and hang — you can put up herbs a few at a time, just as they reach their peak.

Trim any excess cord above the knot. Tie fresh herbs into a small bundle using kitchen twine. Hang them upside down from your drying rack and place near a sunny window if you have one. Remove herbs when dried and store in glass jars.

How long does it take to dry herbs?

Allow seven to 10 days to dry, depending on the size of the branches and humidity. They're completely dry if the leaves sound like crisp cornflakes when crushed. You also can air-dry the seeds of herbs such as fennel, parsley, caraway and coriander.

Tie stems in bundles and hang the herbs upside down. Use twist-ties so you can easily tighten the bundles when stems shrink as they dry. A warm, dry spot is best; avoid the kitchen. Wrap muslin, a mesh produce bag or a paper bag with several holes around the bundle, and tie it at the neck.

How to store herbs?

  • Whole herbs generally last longer. Store them as it is and grind them as needed. You will get fresher and stronger flavours this way.

  • Make sure your dried herbs are completely devoid of any moisture. A good way of checking for any moisture is to rub a bit of these herbs in between your fingers. If the herbs crumble easily, they have dried out.

  • Store these herbs in an airtight black coloured or dark container so that the exposure to the oxygen does not spoil them. Avoid using plastic containers as it may leach chemicals in to your herbs; instead use glass bottles.

  • Keep these jars away from sunlight; instead store them in a dark and dry place. Sunlight may ruin the potency of the herbs.

  • To extend their life, you must store them in cool and dry place. Do not keep the containers near your stove.
