How Chinese Yoyo Get Known In Europe

It was Father Amiot, the missionary that first mentioned diabolo in Europe where he described it as an object of the Chinese tradition that make snoring sound like the one produced by the Spinning machine in Germany.

He said the object has two cone-shaped parts that are made from bamboo and are connected together at the narrow ends by a crosspiece (axle). Each disc part of the object has a hole drilled in it, which is opposite to the other hole on the second disc. When a string is looped around the axle of the object and thrown into the air, it will try to maintain its stability by rotating and the rushing air into the holes makes the snoring sound.

There are different types of diabolo yoyonow, which are made with different materials other than wood, or bamboo and they come in different sizes and weights. They are basically used for amusements and sports when they are spun in different ways while turning different parts of the body. Thisyoyowas used and enjoyed for entertainment in the nineteenth century until when tragedy struck and one of the entertainers using it lost his life that it was banned from some nations in Europe.

The design and making of yoyo now vary from different times and different nations. The Chinese have made their own from bamboo tree while wooden yoyo were found in the United Kingdom during the Victorian times. Phillippart Gustave first designed and made diabolo from rubber in the year 1905. The twentieth century saw similar yoyo made from both rubber and plastic.

There are also metallic yoyo made by the Parker Brothers, which can be used when including fire in performing yoyo tricks.  Metallic yoyo would have steel axles and we have varieties that have celluloid materials. All the design are done to achieve certain particular objective. For example, yoyo made from Celluloid seems to be frictionless and can spun or rotate faster than metallic yoyo. Also, string made from metal when used with metallic diabolo will produce distinct sound. Weight and size of this object also determines its rate of acceleration when spun. A lightweight yoyo of small size will rotate faster and accelerate quicker than heavier one.

Metallic yoyo will eventually rust while the one made from rubber will not break but may deform or get disfigured after some time. The size of the holes made in the cone part of yoyo will also determine the type of sound it will produce when it is spun.

Some of the tricks that can be performed with yoyo are Toss, Stopover or Trapeze, Suicide release, Sun, Grind and so on. The toss trick involves throwing the Chinese yoyo in the air and then catch it with the string as it is coming down. The player can do many things like making acrobatic turning before catching the yoyo.
