Housekeeping in a Man Cave
Is it safe to say that men experience as many generational splits as the rest of our culture?
I get excited when the generations of men in my all male world offer me consistent criticism. Genuinely. Sincerely. I do not really believe that men of the same generation have the same ideals of what women should be, but by the time I go the rounds with father-in-law, partner and sons in a single day - each unaware of the other, of course - I am extremely vulnerable to identity crisis. Am I supposed to dye my head, go authentic or spike it all? Buzz-z-z-z...
Wrinkled underwear is the first common ideal I have spotted between them. Underwear should never be folded - however large - nor should it ever be sorted. Consistency, at last. May I have some more, gentlemen? Pretty, pretty, lady-like please?
And to think... I used to be an engineer... Those men were no more consistent in their criticisms of the women in their midst. Plural important. I never counted more than one of me, but I was typically referred to in the plural. Especially when someONE needed to tell me why I was not their ideal feminine icon. We never did get to the part of why I was supposed to care. Call me finicky, but I never did my husband shopping at work. Especially after I got married. But... At least I got paid for it.
It must be the day after Mother's Day. My head is aching from all the gifts of generational manly wisdom.
Again I remind myself, "It is not about being perfect. It is about working it out."
