HILARIOUS: People who live right next to the ocean are ADDICTED to the ocean
For most people, the beach is a place to vacation or spend a day or two at. It's their escape from reality even if only for a short time.
But what about the people who live at the beach year-round? This is what it's like to actually grow up alongside a coastline:
1. Constant access to the ocean. If you thought the beach was beautiful in the summer, you have to see it when it is deserted.
(also try sometime to view a beach up north and covered in a blanket of snow - breathtaking).
2. Being asked multiple times at your job, “wait you live here year round?!” and “so you’re a local?”
3. You are basically always tan. Memorial Day doesn’t begin your summer and Labor Day doesn’t end it.
4. Once summer hits you basically have to ride your bike/longboard everywhere to avoid the immense amount of traffic.
5. And you wish they would incorporate a “locals bridge” so you can actually make it to work on time instead of sitting in traffic.
6. You know what a Benny or a Shoobie is.
7. You spend all your time at the beach. Need a break from parents? Beach. Senior skip day? Beach. Need to go for a run? Beach. Sick of school? You guessed it, beach.
8. You hate wearing shoes. On top of that, schools have to remind everyone of dress code once May rolls around. Yes, wearing bathing suits with a cover up or under your uniform or flip flops on your feet is frowned upon even at schools by the beach.
9. All local schools implement a system for early sign-outs when the weather gets warmer because the whole school leaves to go to the beach.
10. Everyone knows how to surf, swim, boat, fish and if you can't, you know someone who can teach you.
11. Your first job as a teenager is beach badge checker for the places that require "badges" or proof that you belong at that pool or that beach (if its a private beach) and the vast majority of upperclassmen in high school and kids attending college locally work as lifeguards.
12. Everything is closed or discounted during the off-season, but you get first grabs at opening days since you’re already here! There will be signs like "they are gone, welcome back! two for one drinks, all day and all night".
13. You hate hate hate tourists, but you have to be nice because they’re essentially paying your paycheck. lol. so true. our taxes are low for ONE reason, TOURISTS. tourists PAY our taxes or we'd be paying at least triple what we pay now.
14. Definition of happiness = the lights turning off after the season is over - in south florida, its YAY its summer the snow birds are gone (or used to be).
15. You clean the two inches of sand, empty water bottles, plastic bags filled with garbage, towels, and beach chairs out of your car....in February, doesn't matter what climate your beach town is, north or south.

shoobies are people who have to walk on the beach wearing their shoes, unlike the locals, whose daily barefoot jaunts from asphalt to the boardwalk to the beach have toughened their feet. Its like being called a tenderfoot or, more to the point, a wimp.
North of Brigantine, shoobies are called bennies.
Benny (beh-nee) n: (Archaic)
A tanless tourist on the beach. Long ago, doctors believed the suns rays were beneficial to ones health, thus the term Benny was born.
You are a Shoobie if:
* Have you ever used wet towels as car drapes so pedestrians or other drivers cant see you shimmy out of your bathing suit?
* Have you ever spent more than five minutes getting your towel in the perfect tanning position to the sun?
* Do you carry enough blankets, towels, coolers, umbrellas and other beach paraphernalia that your family looks more like a safari expedition when you finally get to the beach?
* Do you go in the water, dip down to your waist, wave your hands in the water and then get out?
* Do you have more than three skin tones in the summer?
If you answer yes to any of the above questions, I am afraid you are a shoobie.
reminds me of the bumper sticker, \"my life is better than your vacation\"
No fair! You should go to the beach in the Pacific NW to compare. It\'s colder than a witch\'s tit that\'s for sure. The beaches here are not for going in the water in my opinion although I do see surfers and people (very young) in the water. I\'m not from here, so my first time to the beach was shocking!!! Brrrrrrr!
You are one lucky girl to live on the beach with the warmer water!
I\'ve heard the pacific is very cold. so odd. the indian ocean is supposed to be even warmer than over here - around 82 degrees. yum.
