High School
I think I've done something kinda dumb. I've reconnected with my high school class on Facebook. Now, they're talking about getting together for a reunion. I won't go. I've got 2 sets of memories of my junior and senior year of high school,,,the wonderful memories of being in a small school of 211 kids, 9th-12th grade and a senior class of 58. It seemed so great in my mind. I was in Vo-Ag; had a great little car; played football my junior year, missing my senior year because I was afraid an injury I had in my junior year would come back; the graduation ceremony; and a teacher that let me graduate when I shouldn't have,,that was a story in itself. The reality was different. I never fit in. Most of my class had been together since grade school or junior high. I came out in my junior year and didn't live in the district. Most of the friends I had were from the old district. The only friend I had in high school is dead. He was dead when I attended the only reunion we've had that I know of. And there was trouble; a fight in the hall; almost hitting a P.E. teacher and being thrown out of class; getting a nickname, Elephant, that went with me and tortured me all through school and led to an incident in the hall where I used foul language in front of the whole school; not being able to get a date with a girl in the school and having to use my contacts in the old district to get one; and taking a German exchange school on a blind date to the Junior-Senior Prom just to name a few. It seems on Facebook that many of the people have kept in contact since leaving high school. I haven't. They don't know they may have listened to me on the radio and they probably wouldn't care. They haven't sent any messages to me, nor have they made comments on my status, but they have on others. Why did I think things would change over time? I'm still an outsider and really don't want to see them again. High School,,,dream and reality,,a lot of difference.
