Hello World
Sorry it's been a while peeps, I think I've finally reached the summit here. I got so low I didn't have the wherewithal to even come here. Things have been really bad for me over the past year... but I feel like things are starting to pick up - yet even as I sit here typing this - with all the positive, I feel like someone - namely my uncle - is trying to shove me back into the abyss.
We got into an argument, which in itself is pretty minor, but the argument highlighted something - it highlighted that I may still be a long way from fixed... from reality. Maybe it's a difference of opinion or is my view of reality still so different, so far out as to be suggestive of disassociation? Am I still in wonderland?
To clarify, this minor argument was about films - particularly what some might call "chick-flicks" - but I called him out on it and said that men who didn't admit to enjoying them were cowards.
My uncle said that it "just wasn't done" that women would never be interested in a man who watched "chick flicks" and that men were likely to be wary also.
Have I become so disenchanted from reality that I no-longer feel different, alien - but am I acting as - do I dance like I were the Mad hatter, and the world Alice? Or is it as simple as a difference of opinion.
Personally, I feel my uncle is talking like an old fashioned male chauvinist - or am I still crazy - going round in circles, just to bite myself in the tail? Any opinion would be appreciated... might at least suggest that other people really exist, if nothing else.

No, you\'re fine as far as that opinion is concerned. Your uncle is wrong - some women would rather a guy like chick flicks. I\'m into women and am not very feminine so I cannot speak everyone, but I do know for a fact not all woman want their man to only like masculine, shoot em up shit. Some despise it. I think you\'re uncles view is not taking into account that people are different and gender is more of a social construct than anything else. Our biological sex doesn\'t make us that much different and we all like different things.
I am studying gender role/norm issues and the role of the media influencing really crappy stereotypes and misogyny. So, I have a lot to say on this.
You cannot let things that are mostly based on personal perspective and opinion make you question your sanity, you\'ll drive yourself bonkers. I would know. Having some unique perspectives and thinking outside the box isn\'t bad.
If you\'ve been doing things or taking medication to feel better, keep taking it, follow your routine and what\'s been prescribed and stay consistent with getting support and getting back on solid ground. The world is a bit mad, we\'re all mad here, but your uncle having different views on women\'s movie preferences and what guys can and cannot do or should/should not do, is nothing to fret about
Maybe my uncle should have a read of judith butler\'s work on the performativity of gender - he he. I think any work written from that would be very interesting, the media has a lot of effect on people and their perspective of their gender/gendered role. Funnily, just the other day I read a book called Luna by Julie Anne Peters, which really looks at the construction of a gendered identity. Really interesting and deeply affecting material.
I\'m learning that now, at the end of the day, it seems that a lot of this pressure to accept opinions is, in itself, a form of psychological bullying - to force you to adhere to the status quo, it\'s a form of ideological brainwashing - something I refuse to \"acclimatize\" to.
Thanks for your support. It\'s great to hear from you.
