Having Standards Leads to Disappointment

I feel like I shouldn't have standards anymore because all people do is end up breaking them or falling short which ends up disappointing me. I don't like relying on others because they constantly seem to let you down.

I've always considered myself a realist which consequently makes me a bit of a pessimist as well.

I dunno... Part of me feels that things are never going to change, so all I can do is tie my shoes nice and tight, pick myself up and dust off before trudging forward once more.

You wrote everything I completely identitify with....about standards being disappointment and being a realist /pessimist.

You really are not alone. I did not believe it until I read your post.

i completely understand how you feel. i really do. i\'ve had to fight for \"little victories\".... stuff like someone showing up when they say they will, or texting me when i\'ve asked them to. it isn\'t bad to have standards at all. just make sure you are evaluating them, as the world around you always changes and you should change along with it (in some ways, you know what i mean lol). and above all else, never forget who you are. for you are an amazing person and a great friend, one who i value. never lose that

Hekela: I\'m glad that you were able to relate to what I said. I know that it can be comforting to know you\'re not the only one in the world that thinks the way you do.

FadingIntoDarkness: I hate to say it, but I\'ve been surrounded by \"shit\" for so long that \"normal\" standards seem completely blown out of proportion to me. Like, having a stable job/income seems like I\'m asking for an arm in my current mindset. I know that\'s something I have to address and overcome, but it\'s a slow process. And you\'re the second person today to tell me to not forget that I\'m an amazing person. I try, I really do lol... Just low self confidence/self esteem get the best of me. And as always, I appreciate everything you do for me and the support/stability you extend to my life.
