Have set a difficult goal
I've decided to ditch the diet soda once and for all. I've been hearing for a long time how dangerous the aspartame is and have finally decided to give up my addiction. I'm going cold turkey. I'm also going to avoid artificial sweeteners in general, except for Stevia, which is supposed to be the safest.
I've also been hearing for a long time that diet soda will make you GAIN WEIGHT. I thought, that is ridiculous, how can something with 0 calories make you gain? Finally found out the reason. Diet soda is extremely acid-forming in the body. An acidic body will hold on to its fat. Excess protein such as meat, will also cause the body to be very acidic.
I bought a PREVENTION book called 60 Seconds to Slim, which outlines a general plan to make the body alkaline, its healthy and desirable state. The author considers diet soda to be even worse than the sugared sodas. She insists it should be eliminated completely, along with sugared soda, artificial sweeteners (except for Stevia), animal protein (except for fish up to 3 times a week, if desired). Lots of non-starchy veggies must be added to the diet for maximum alkaline results.
She states that "never in history have people been eating so much sugar, meat, and dairy, all leading to an overly acid and obesity-prone body. And our bodies were never meant to eat processed, packaged foods, which contain high fructose corn syrup, trans-fats, and artificial ingredients of all kinds. Eat whole foods in their natural state.
If acid is keeping me fat, I'll soon find out! I'm planning to "eat clean" as much as possible. Goodbye, diet soda, I'M GOING TO MISS YOU!!!

Thank you for the very helpful health information. :)
Stevia, the only artificial sweetener deemed to be safe, comes in both powdered and liquid form. I bought a little bottle of the liquid to add to coffee or lemonade. This book also says adding fresh squeezed lemon to your water is a good alternative to that AWFUL stuff, soda! I always thought the diet cola was fine, but this nutritionist says it\'s even worse for the body than sugared soda. Eliminate ALL soda, she says. It\'s going to be tough!
Good luck on your goal. I know you can ditch the diet soda. I have heard it is also back for your teeth and gums.
Good Luck. I hope you lose weight from this. I thought stevia was natural, made from a plant?
I make my own soda== seltzer and a little bit of juice.
Anybody else quit soda? How did it go? Yes, stevia is a natural plant or herb. As for making soda with seltzer and juice, that would still not be \"kosher\" according to this book. No carbonated or fizzy drinks whatsoever, and very little fruit juice. Add LEMON or LIME to pure water if possible, and add stevia.
Hi, I quit soda in Nov./Dec. of 2009 before my bariatric surgery, or even before that. It was not difficult and now only on the rarest of occasions do I drink it now. Believe me you will not miss it. You may miss the caffeine however. So I do drink plain unsweetened iced tea. Limeade with Stevia is very yummy.
Just squeeze a few limes add a packet or two of Truvia depending on how much water you add. And enjoy!!!
