Happy Valentine's Day

Yesterday was my younger son's 15th birthday.  He was born on Friday the 13th and under not-very-ideal circumstances.  Things were rough for us then and and the date has significant meaning in other ways, too, so it's a touchy day.  The blessing of his birth has always had its own shadow.
As for cupid and roses and chocolate, well, it's been hard to celebrate Valentine's Day - ever.  Honestly, I can't remember a "great" Valentine's Day in the 20 years H and I have known each other.  Okay?  Sure.  Decent?  Yeah.  Tolerable?  OK.  But I don't remember a great one.  Mostly, I remember disappointment or thinking of it as just another day.
This year, we're going out to eat with my oldest son and his girlfriend.  Even though we're not doing anything super special or fancy or romantic, I feel good about it.  I already gave H his present - I wanted to surprise him and we're both still up after midnight gaming, so I said, "Hey... can you please go get me some ice?"  It was a lame excuse, but he ran to get the ice and I really quickly decorated his whole computer area with crocheted hearts I had made, including a large one I put under a heart shape box I'd picked up from the dollar store which held several crocheted candies.
It was all silly and cutsie, but it made him smile.  He's trying to lose weight and get back into shape, or else I'd get him chocolate covered cherries or some other dark chocolate goodie, but I hate to do that when he's working so hard to behave himself, so this was a neat way to give him candy that isn't bad for him.  I still have a few more surprises up my sleeve, but it was a good start.
I guess, skimming the details aside, I can just say I'm actually looking forward to today and not dreading it like I thought I would.  Yes, bad things have happened on and around Valentine's Day but I think on this one, I can let go and just enjoy what is rather than stressing over what wasn't or what might not be.
