Happy Birthday - Coppertone Girl !!
One of the advertising world's most iconic poster children turns 60 this summer, and she's still showing her tan line more than her age.
The rosy-cheeked little girl with a cocker spaniel pulling at her bathing suit bottoms hit the scene for Coppertone suntan lotion in 1953.
She was the creation of artist Joyce Ballantyne Brand, who died in 2006. Most of Brand's subjects, however, were a little older: she was one of the most successful American painters of pinup girls, and one of the only women in the industry during the art form's heyday in the 1930s and '40s. Brand studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and launched her career painting for advertisements and calendars with Brown and Bigelow, the same company that published early work by Norman Rockwell and Maxfield Parrish.
The chubby blonde toddler was modeled after Joyce's daughter Cheri, and has since been remembered in billboard advertisements, TV commercials and even a lookalike contest (not to mention a rather saucy Esquireparody).
Lately, she's even started wearing a hat.
