Hammering II

The crooning co-worker who helped me gain control of my construction performance anxiety is floating in my head again. Mind you, I amnae complaining. His silky tenor is welcome in my head, any time. The blending of blues and physics still excites my senses. His particular lesson was on trim carpentry, where excess force causes considerable damage. My performance anxiety over owning the only tits on the job site had me clutching and swinging the hammer mercilessly, leaving dings and scratches all over the trim. His guidance was simple. "Lighten up, lady. Easy does it." The crooning song he used to help me find my tempo and swing was soothing enough to still be with me three decades later. "Don't make it more work than it has to be. Just let that hammer fall. Add an ounce of gentle guidance while the gravity works and just let that hammer fall."

Are my panic attacks escalating with the work of moving domestic operations into the new house? Tough measure. Beyond the early therapy logs which helped me grow an awareness of the phenom, I havnae kept score of my panic attacks. For certain there is evidence that panic attacks have been a daily occurrance for me for most of my life. Theories abound on the why but proof remains unavailable so I let the mystery be while I deal with the panic attacks as they hit. It feels predictable enough that they would escalate here in the volcanic upheaval which has been spewing since my son and his wife were killed in that September crash.

Breathing. . . This morning's song of the crooning co-worker was plied to the spin of the allen wrench which disassembled baby sisters crib. The morning's rare prairie fog is still thick outside, renewing my craving for the daily ground hugging river fogs. Every so often this dusty hilltop gets one of those ground hugging fogs. They soothe my sinuses with a reminiscant mist. Time to breathe deep while I load and unload the crib and a few other sets of kidly etceteras. Hubs and I are beginning to see evidence of the grinning geezers that got buried under the volcanic ash. . . Yea, we really do have needs of our own. Plying bandages.

Stepping small, praying big and resting often.

"Just let that hammer fall with gentle guidance"--wow, what a great metaphor for the program slogan from Alanon, "let go and let God." Thanks for sharing that image from your co-worker. I once worked construction, too, so the picture you described translated pretty clearly in my head, arfie. Praying big along with you today.

This fellow wasnae with the crew for long enough to learn his name, but he looked enough like Scatman Crothers that I have dubbed him, "Scatman." Didn't sound too much like Scatman Crothers, though. That mellow croon he used to set his work cadence is one of the finest noises recorded in my head. I love cadence songs. They make it so easy to set a pace you can keep. It broke my heart when he stopped showing up for work. Fellow lovers of cadence songs are hard to come by here in the recorded music era. Of course I sang along. I'm still singing along, 30 years after the fact.

Hubs and I took the next leap in the house furnishing process. A coffee table and two end tables for the living room. The perfect match for the camp cot and air mattress that currently fill that room.

Girl howdy, this is a tough leap of faith for us. Left to my own preferences, I like to travel light. Emphasis on "light." A guitar, backpack and my busy bag. Little enough that I can move easily between mass transit vehicles. Hubs enjoys townie comforts far more than I do, but he is still a less is better kind of guy. Well. . . As much as a big guy can be. Tiny House living isn't real feasible for a 6'5" frame. What the fuck are either one of us going to do with 2,000 sq feet of furniture if the GKs arenae here to use it? There is quite allot of head noise encouraging me to wait until after the permanency hearing, but? ? ? The quiet voice is encouraging the leap of faith.

As I let myself fall into the abyss
As an act of faith free of remiss
The future trembles like a leaf in the wind
I havenae a clue which order to rescind
Uncertainty blows through every gust
With a prayer and song, I listen in trust

arfie, the verse here about the abyss remiss reminded me I had a support group friend who talked about how he tried to avoid the void. Lovely guy.

I do know who Scatman Crothers was and still listen for any echos of his style in music. Though his personal style translated to many more forms, TV, voice overs,
Slowing to a pace that causes no harm to you or what you are working on is a task.
Hugs arfie from north of the rivers. I'm finding my pace in cooking, finely diced or sliced as needed breathing at the same pace.
