In the midst of all this "mother nature tragedy" I want to share a work story that happened yesterday that almost made me WET MY PANTS, i laughed so hard...:)
This student came into my office who was obviously sick and needed to go home. This student was vietnamese, spoke english, but definitely his native language better! So in looking @ his contact list, I was going to call his mother. Her first name was HA - I had to call her work (a manicure/pedicure place) and of course the person who answered the phone was also from Viet Nam so the conversation went something like this:
Vicki: Good Morning, could I speak to HA?
Person: HA? dO you need a pedicure? manicure?
Vicki: No, I don't need a pedicure or manicure. I would like to speak to HA.
Person: HA? HA? HA?
Vicki: Yes, yes, yes, HA - come to the telephone
It was silent for a moment and the person said, with a chuckle - "HA not here, HA.....Goodbye.
So, I found out, HA goes by Holly and she in fact was there. This student tried to call, speaking Vietnamese, but HA was not known to them....I left a message for Dad - Vinh - and he finally came to pick up his son. He said, why did you not call my wife? I said, HA? He laughed and said, HA HA......she is called Holly @ work. Anyway, that gave me a chuckle.
I have been so busy with students - it has been very stressful here as our school counselor's daughter is in Miami attending college and due to the Hurricane Irma, she is so worried and we all have been keeping up with the news. My step-mom lives in Naples, Florida and left with her family to get away from Florida. So many of our sisters are affected and have been affected by Harvey - my heart is heavy today.
It's almost time for me to go home for the day - going to meet a girlfriend for a margarita after work - laugh and talk about the week as she is the nurse @ the high school and some of her stories are just as funny.!

It made me smile, thank you for sharing. I can only imagine from my good ol' days working in a school. I think I may have wet my pants too, let alone trying to keep from laughing while talking to the manicure/pedicure place.
Yes, the news of Harvey and Irma sure make my heart heavy too. I feel so helpless, all I can do is pray. Sending love your way...
It did put a smile on my face. Asians often change their names so that we can understand. We taught in China. We had a phone interview for the job. The administrator called at 2 am (it was daytime in China). That would have been fine except he asked for Mr. Joe! Joe almost hung up on our future boss! The Chinese put their given name after family name. Names can be a problem. Students pick their name. One of Joe's students called himself Hitler! Joe tried to suggest that perhaps he may want to reconsider = he was taking International Business. I am not sure if he changed!

Humor in the midst is what keeps us going, I know it does for me. My husband had a co-worker named Charlie Wong. On his voice mail message he said, "You have reached the "Wong" number and he loved it because it certainly cut down on the messages people left, because they would quickly hang up believing they had called the "Wong" number. LOL!
